I thought DLP tv's were LCD's with TI technology incorporated with them, like a different chip or something. I don't think this is correct after reading some posts. Does the bulb on DLP's go out more often than LCD's? sorry for the newb question

2k-4k hours that doesn't seem like a long life for a bulb, kind of a pain in the a$$ to change a bulb every 2k-4k hours. Is DLP manufacturers fixing this problem? What kind of hours have you gotten out of your DLP's?

2k-4k hours is about average for both DLP and LCD rear/front projection units, that is why I use my projector mostly for movies and rarely for TV(for that I use a CRT TV). I've had my projector for about for about 2.5 years and have used about 2k out of 4k, so I've got about 2.5 years left and by then I'll probably upgrade to a HD 1080 resolution projector.

cheers :)

There are some new model RPTVs with LED light engines coming out from Samsung in the coming months and these allegedly have 20,000 hour lives plus a larger color gamut and no color wheel needed which would do away with rainbows. JVC is also bringing out a LCOS RPTV with an LED light engine too. The jury, of course, is still out as to how long these LED light engines really last and how good the picture quality is--but it sure piques my interest!!!!

2K - 4K hours is an incredible amount time for a lightbulb. Lightbulbs in 16mm projection equipment (1,000 watt) last approximately 25 hours.

True!! BUT--they don't cost $300+, or in the case of the Sony "Ruby" $999.95. Just like when purchasing a house or buying a car, the total costs of purchasing and running a display, including overhead, should be figured into the overall cost picture for those of us that are unfortunate enough to need to be careful of our funds.
