Hi,
I read lots of sites claiming DIY project will be better than spending the same money on a store sub. What do YOU think.

Im planning to do my first DIY - a sonotube sub with Behringer pro EP1500 amp and Sound Spliter RL-p15 subwoofer. Total cost will come out to about $600 for parts and labour. From reviews it will be more than enuough to fill my room with shaking bass.

If I was buying from a store my choice would be: Velodyne 15" powered sub, or SVS PB12/plus2 - both around $1200. From reviews, this would be the best suited for my room.

Do you think if you follow plans correctly , the DIY sub will match the store mass produced subs?????

Before I start I would like to get you input.

Thnx

YES! A well designed and built DIY sub can ceratainly match and surpass anything in it's price range and quite a ways beyond. I built my sub for a total price of around $300. If performs better than anything I have heard for under $1,500 (though I have never heard SVS). I also built some speakers to go along with the sub and the results were amazing.

Some day I plan on building the ultimate monster sub using TC-Sounds drivers. That will cost me a bit more but I'll bet anyone would be hard pressed to find a store bought sub that could match it, especially not for the price.

It's certainly possible. Building a DIY will be cheaper and you can get the same amount of output if done correctly. There's also the possibility it won't match the output, or that it will exceed. It all depends on how good a job you do and how good the design is.

With retail, you know what you're getting. The output, the finish quality, etc is the same every time. If you're a handy guy (i would think this would be an easy job for a cabinetmaker), go for it. Personally, i'm not that handy :)

Thnx, i will get the tools and materials needed and get to work now. If i get stuck there is a lot of helpful sites. It will be rewarding at the same time that I build it. (My wife will probably disagree and tell me to tone it down though).

Thx
