I am building a 5.1 surround sound system for my PC for gaming, watching DVD's etc. For the two front left and right speakers I am using my current XPRO 555 speakers, the backs I am getting are from ebuyer (quickfind code 126822) and I am building a sub from a guide on the internet. The only problem that I have is that I can't find a decent centre speaker thats in my price range (ie under £40). So I am thinking of getting another set of the back speakers and using them mounted on their side. Will this work and does anyone else have any suggestions or improvements for any part of the system?

PC games that have surround mixes are usually mixed in something an HT receiver can't decode, so don't be disappointed when you don't get 5.1 from your games. In fact, none of the games I own are capable of having 5.1 sound through my receiver.

I would suggest buying boxed system

I presume you wish to take the outputs from your Audio card if so and it is of reasonable quality you should get reasonable results.

II looked into this it all depend on the quality you require.

If you want reasonable quality you are better off buying a boxed system. Just read the computer magazine reviews.

If you want good quality then you need to look at your budget.

Please give some computer specs size of room etc.

I personally use my computer for DVD’s but not for watching on the PC but a large analogue TV. I also have a Quality Video projector and the results are fantastic. Sound wise you need a quality audio card which has the top end outputs and good screening to get anything like good audio.

I have decided to scrap my plan for my surround sound system due to size constraints over where to put the sub and amps so i am going to get a 4.0 sound card and buy the speakers I was going to use for the backs so that I get quadraphonic sound and a bit of a bass boost from the small subs on the side of the speakers - plus it will end up being cheaper.
