DIY Subwoofer question...

I am new to the home audio/video scene and am putting togther my first system. I just bought a Yamaha RX-V1500 receiver and a pair of psb image 4t towers. I'm not going to get center channel or surrounds until I move to my new house this spring. But I would like to get some bass going before then. I have two 12" Image Dynamics IDQ v.2 subs that car sold as car audio subs that I would like to use. I am planning on using one of these amps on each sub:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-804

This way each sub will be getting 240W which I think would be enough, for now anyways.

Now my question is can anyone tell me what the volume of my box should be? I was told that I will have to build it different then the specifications given since that is for in a car. How should the box be compared to the specs given for in a car?

Thanks

sorry if this is in wrong forum!

Nothing wrong with using car subs. Im doing the same, and Image Dynamics are great subs. I think 240w to each sub is more than enough. However, the design on the box depends on how you plan on using them. If you're going to be using a bi-design (1 sub on the left, 1 sub on the right) I would go with a sealed box, maybe 1-2 cubic ft. You might have to play around with the phasing of each to get it to sound right, but that would probably most effecient, compact design. Now if you were to go down-firing, I would go with a BIG cu. ft. ported design box. Anyways, good luck. :)

Ok but when building the enclosure should I build it to spec with the specs given for a box in car?

It says for sealed:

ENCLOSURE: VOLUME - FREE SPACE: -3db In Car
small: .55 cuft - 50 hz: 20 hz
normal: .85 cuft - 43 hz: 16hz
large: 1 cuft - 40 hz: 14 hz

ported:

ENCLOSURE: Volume - ported frequency - free space: - 3db In Car
small: 1 cuft - 32 hz - 38 hz: 20 hz
normal: 1.25 cuft - 30 hz - 32 hz: 18 hz
large: 1.5 cuft - 28 hz - 28 hz: 16 hz

And then it gives what port length and diameter should be. If I go ported do I use the exact specs they give for best results? Or are these only for best results in a car?

The subs will be used about 25% movies 75% music.

Well, with a sealed enclosure you could probably build it a bit smaller than the specs call out and get away with it. Just build a sealed enclosure with a airtight divider down the middle and call it a day.

If you decide you want to port it, it's gonna be a pain. To tune the box correctly, you have to build the box to very exacting specs. Just vent it instead with a couple of airports and be happy. Peace_

I want to build it so it has the best bass reproduction for like i said 25% movies 75% music. so for sealed I have as much space as I need and can build the box to whatever so what wouldbe best for my application? You say witha divider... this is just so their isnt any pressure on the amp correct?

You say just vent it with a couple of air ports and be happy? How is tht different then porting it? i am somewhat confused from your second statement
