XLR is a type of connector needed for the pro-audio power amps.

You can find the driver on ebay for around $175.

Yes he did do a nice job. Anywhere to buy boxes already done. Other than parts express? Looking for something a little nicer

You can hire a local cabinet builder like I might do and have them build it for you and use a veneer instead of painting it.

The massive folded slot port is a CRITICAL part of the performance of this subwoofer. You can't buy a pre-made box and throw regular ports in it and expect anywhere near the performance. But you can have a local cabinet maker or car audio shop build the proper cabinet for you as a custom project. Use a cabinet shop if you want furniture grade finished work, of course. Most car audio shops just apply texture/stone paints and carpet.

Thanks chris.. would you say this is the best bang for the buck diy? Is the driver top notch? Could you use other driver? What is the best amp? Thanks Joe

If you more SPL or deeper extension, or if you want a smaller cabinet, I can cite alternates. But this is a very high value project that will provide transparent bass for music, and substantial SPL for movies, at least as long as it's corner loaded and used in a mostly closed room of less than 2000 cubic feet. Dual set of the subs, one placed near each main is optimal. Alternative projects will raise the cost, of course.

Your choice of amp, specifically, is not imporotant so far as brand/model. But it should have a minimum of 500 watts RMS per channel into 4 Ohms for the Kappa 12VQ drivers. 1000 watts per channel is ideal.

curious to know how one of these would sound head to head with say, an ultra 13 or mfw-15? just for comparisons sake!! i built many a car stereo sub cabinet back the day of the orion hcca amps...

Well the Ultra 13 has the output and extension of 2 MFW-15's (plus a little more even)....so that's not a fair comparison. Take a look at ParadigmDawgs build thread...he used an Audiopulse Axis 15'' driver with an EP2500 and this sealed unit outperforms his Paradigm Servo which cost over 2x as much....

i should have said dual mfw's! after mulling around in another thread about the svs, i got a steal of a deal on just one mfw, so i figured i'd give it a try. not bad, but i would definitely need two for satisfaction. so back to the svs drawing board again. it takes roughly the same space as one mfw and does what two can do. after looking at what some of the guys are getting for their dollar on the diy side of things, i wouldn't mind giving that a try. i can build the cabinets, not too sure of how expesive it would be to get a nice veneer job on one though?

Is the MFW that incapable? The Kappa Perfect VQ avaserfi design should actually produce more output in the 18-30Hz range as compared to the Ultra 13, while the Ultra will produce a little bit more output in the 35-100Hz range.

Paradigm Dawg ran with the idea I suggested to Avaserfi as far as the driver and cabinet are concerned. The AXIS is not by any means a normal driver (it has extraordinary thermal capacity and linear excursion ) - and it is not even being used near it's potential with the 2000 watts Paradigm Dawg is using to drive it with. A 2000 watt amp will clip far before you will ever come close to approaching that driver's thermal dissipation limits or linear excursion limits.

Chris, I by no means meant to sound as if the MFW is incapable....I wish I knew the link, but I read a comparison of the two with room measurement graphs and response measurements that confirmed that two MFWs are about the same as a single Ultra...with the ultra having a slight output advantage overall. That is where I was coming from on that...

the driver and the relatively small amp the mfw has, imo, holds it back somewhat. very good enclosure though.

Actually I believe the MFW had the output advantage until below 20hz or so (from what I remeber). Both were similar in terms of response (again until below 20hz). The MFW's were placed on top of each other to simulate one sub. If they were properly integrated into the room (i.e. sperate locations to balance response), the sub 20hz output advantage would be of little concern as they would integrate better overall.

This all sounds good but I only have room for one sub. Is this the diy sub for me. I dont mind spending a little extra money on the driver and amp.
