My cousin showed me the other day his DIY projector that he got the idea from Lumen lab. The picture quality is good with his PS3 as a blu ray player.
He said he spend less than $750 on this 720p projector. He also said that for about $150 more he can have the 1080p projector. With the price of 1080p projector right now (> $3,000 + ) this is a big discount. And the bulb cost only less than $70 and last for about 6,000 hrs.
The only thing that I dont like on his projector is the big ugly wooden box that enclose the whole unit. At least he camouflage it with a dark gray color paint that matches his HT room.
Any of you guys have this or seen this kind of projector from somebody in action? What are your thoughts? Pros, cons compare other PJ.
Im in a shopping for a projector right now and I just want to hear from someone that this DIY PJ is a good choice. Thanks.

O.K., where's the punchline? Or is the "big ugly wooden box" the funny part?

These projectors typically have no zoom at all, are incredibly noisy, and get very hot. They have very poor image uniformity, poor color reproduction, and very poor contrast ratios.

They are great as a 'fun project', but as far as an actual projector with an incredibly image, they don't even come close to delivering what DLP, LCD, and LCoS models can deliver. Especially considering how inexpensive current entry level DLP/LCD 720p models are running.

Front projection isn't just a big image on a screen...

It's a QUALITY big image on a screen.

Thanks BMXTRIX: couldn't have said it better myself.

I'm still waiting for the punchline, but some of us fail to have a healthy sense of humor.;) "Big ugly wooden box." Sheeeeesh. ;)

For about the same price you can pick up a Mitsubishi HD-1000U which will most likely blow away the DIY projector in image quality while being very compact and virtually silent.

Those are some very nice pictures. I wish my projector was that good.
