DIY One Room Audio System

Hi,

I am by no means an audiophile and know very little about speaker/amps/ect...

I know there are systems out there like Sonos that allow you to stream music in multiple rooms. I am looking for a cheap, one room alternative. Ideally I would be able to stream music from my phone (Spotify) to the system. The limited sound quality of Spotify will limit the performance in speakers that I need and I imagine there is a more cost effective and better performing alternative than a portable speaker. I have a pair of KLH Model One (16 ohms) speakers available that are still in great, working condition. Would it be possible to connect those to a small bookshelf amp and bluetooth receiver? What kind of power amp would I need? I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions.

There are receivers you can connect with your phone, so I would get receiver with features you need if you don't have amp already. There are also some bluetooth modules you could use with any amp.

Do you have anything else than the speakers yet? If I'm not wrong, those speakers are really old? What size is your room? What is your budget?

I don't have anything but the speakers yet. I was originally intrigued by a DIY post about setting up a bookshelf speaker system for under $100. I don't really have a budget but I don't want to spend too much because the quality of the audio I am streaming is limited. The room is about 35 ft x 15ft. Those speakers are very old. They are in working condition but I am not married to them if you have a better suggestion.

For your budget I would look for these speakers https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-b652-air-6-1-2-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-with-amt-tweeter-pair--300-651 and used receiver from craigslist. Or even better if you can find some nice used speakers from craigslist. Or if you want to pair those daytons with new amp then lepai 2020A+ is good option.

If you provide your area perhaps some one can check your local craigslist for used gears.

Thank you so much for the help! I have looked into the lepai 2020A+ but wasn't sure what size speakers to get with it. I am in the Philadelphia area, I will try to check CL for used speakers. When buying used speakers, how do you know they are still in good shape? Thank you again for the help.
