Lately i been mulling about with the idea of fabricating a custom chassis and casing for my JVC XV-C3 player. I recently got hold of some 5 mm MDF boards and wonder if its a good idea to just use glue in fabricating it or a combo of screws and glue. Finishing up with a rosewood veneer for the classic look. I want to match it to my rosewood wharfies. :)

I would use screws and glue just for the added stability and structural soundness over glue. While using just glue might depending on the weight put on each shelf work adding the screws be a cheap way to have a much higher build quality that would withstand more weight.

What exactly do you mean by casing? You want to enclose what?

Pretty sure he means the DVD player itself...at least thats what I thought when I read the post.

Don't most dvd players and other electronics ground to the chassis internally? How is this achieved if using a wood chassis? Also, if mdf is used with a good wood glue, it usually is impossible to break at the joint when dry. Using a simple right angle or corner clamp can achieve this with no nails or screws. Nails and screws are there to simply hold the pieces in place until the glue/adhesive is dry.

I was referring to the DVD player. I was just stripping it for painting and realized if i can remove the components and rearrange them (with a bit of re soldering) I might be able to come up with a more aesthetically pleasing casing that matches the rest of my setup. :)

More power to you, but this is definitley one I would not even consider doing, particularly the resoldering bit. I was an assembler, so I've done plenty of soldering and testing, but this just seems a bit pointless to me. Wood shouldn't be a big problem AFAIK, since a lot of 70s gear had wood cases. My Pioneer SX-990 does.

How about just a thin cover over the player to give you the look?

Ha ha, i know what you mean but i wasn't contemplating removing everything. I was just thinking of repositioning the different parts and subbing some of the switches, but then heck i might just pop into the shops to get a new one to avoid the hassle. :)
