Display Sound Connection

I'm about to purchase a Pioneer plasma, and I have been considering hooking it up independent of the prepro, just so I can watch regular tv without having to fire up the entire system. Question is, how do I connect the tv's sound to the prepro when its time to do some movie watching. Also share the pros and cons on this setup. Thanks.

This is just off the top of my head, but if you have a CableCard, maybe you can hook your coaxial cable to the TV for normal viewing and also use an optical out cable to send to the pre-pro for movie watching on movie channels. At least I think it has an optical out...

I just run a HDMI directly from the Sat box to the TV and an opt cable from the Sat box to the AVR. I leave the AVR off if I want to use the TV speakers and fire it up if I want awesome sound.

Do you have to mute your television or will turning on the receiver make the set top box correctly divert the audio signal?

The TV mutes automatically via the Harmony remote when I use the AVR.

Thanks for your reponses guys. I suppose that this setup presents no problems with decoding the various soundfields. Thanks for the responses. I just posted a similar question elsewhere in the forums before seeing these replies. thanks again.

Wait a minute... assume everything is HDMI, if I connect the Cable box to the tv and the tv to the receiver... again all HDMI, would really need to run another cable? So, I just want to watch the TV, without the system on it should be fine, but if I want to watch a movie on HBO and run it in surround sound through the systm, I'm assuming I just switch the audio to the input that the tv is connected to correct? That should be carrying the audio signal (Dolby Digital)from the cable right?
