This is just a curiosity that I just thought of. Can you connect a source like a cd/dvd player directly to an amplifier through stereo analog inputs without going through a pre/pro? I have no plans on doing this, but it just crossed my mind whether it would be a bad thing to do or not (read: an expensive boo-boo). Thanks for indulging me.

Probably. Many CD and DVD players have volume controls. The stereo analog outputs are the same as pre-amp outputs. You could wire them to a stereo amp or two monoblocks and control the volume directly from the CD player.

Just to add in a little more clarification. If the source does have its own volume you can but do not do it without the volume control. If you were to hook a player up without the volume control it would in the most basic sense, be like putting in a cd at full volume.

I think this is very feasable with an amp such as Emotiva's BPA-1 that has it's own volume control.

I have tried hooking up a $500 Sony DVD player (with speaker level control & internal decoders for DTS/DD 5.1) to a Class AB amplifier (without volume control). It does NOT work. TOO LOUD.

I have also hooked a Sony DVD player to an amplifier (with volume control) and it works perfectly.

So basically, you can hook a source player to an integrated amplifier or an amplifier with volume control.

I have never seen or even hear of a source player with actual volume control. The speaker/bass management inside the source player is not the same thing as volume control.

Thanks folks. I really have no reason to know this stuff other than just being curious :D
