Just purchased the Sony 60" SXRD Projection HDTV and the 1000 watt Onkyo 7.1 All-in-one-box surround system to go with it. I'm using a Motorola digital cable/dvr box from Comcast for my cable programming.

My Sony DVD/VCR player is connected via component calbes to the A/V receiver. Component cables then run from the reciever to the TV. In addition, I have digital coax running from the DVD/VCR to the receiver for audio. Playing DVD's through the 7.1 Onkyo system sound excellent.

However, if I want to simply watch cable television and have the audio signal run through the A/V receiver, I get no sound. I could use the speakers on the television, but if I've got a surround system installed, I want to be able to use it!

So the digital cable/dvr box is connected to the television using HDMI.
I then have an Optical Audio cable running from the TV to the A/V receiver. I was told this would work, but not so far.

Somebody at work mentioned that it might be because HDMI has everything in one cable and that the audio signal might not be able to split off separately to the receiver? They recommended running component cables from the digital cable/dvr box instead of HDMI????

Let me know what other details you might need to help.

I'm not sure what connections I'm missing....but any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated!!!!

Most likely you need to access the cable box menu to set it up for HDMI output, both video and audio. Or, that box or Comcast there is not set up to do HDMI, yet.
If not successful, use component and digital audio.

Also, make sure that the Digital port on the TV is in fact an output - I've seen a few TVs with digital inputs but only L/R RCA outs, which is pretty counterintuitive to having a HDMI in.

Have you tried going from an optical/digital coax out on the set top box to the receiver (bypassing the TV, basically the same way your DVD player does)?

I would try connecting the optical cable directly from the cable box to the receiver.

On the motorola receivers, you can get to the internal menu by turning the power OFF. Then hit MENU. Use the up down left right arrows to navigate.
Any other questions on settings.. ask I can go look at mine and let you know. Cant think of any off the top of my head.
