Different Volumes between hdtv/sdtv channels/dvd

Hi all,

Just when I thought I was already set with the HT room, I've noticed that when switching channels between sdtv, hdtv and playing a dvd, the volume do not exactly match. The DVD seems to be the loudest when played at 60 or 60% (as seen on the Onkyo sr-604) when I switch it to hdtv, I have to turn up the volume to at around 67, and if it's to regular tv, the volume needs to be turned to 75 to get the same loudness as the DVD.

From the cable box I have component and rca cables running to the receiver, from the dvd, I have hdmi to the receiver, I do not use the tv speakers at all, they are turned off. From the receiver part I have already ran the Audiossey (is that the right spelling?) equalizer set up mic.

I did everything that was on the manual and reread it just to make sure I didn't miss a thing, is there a setting that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for any inputs!

In my set up hi-def channels play softer than regular tv, so yeah, when I go from HD to regular channels I turn it up a bit, my dvds no change, same as regular channels.

There will always be different volume levels between sources because each has a different average level.

The IntelliVolume feature of the Onkyo can help with that but is itself not foolproof because it only compensates for difference between inputs. It won't help one bit for different programs coming over the same input - like one cable box that is feeding it both SD and HD channels. It will help to level out the difference between the DVD input and the cable box input.
