I was at Lowes today looking at their plywoods since I've got a speaker project brewing and saw a typical blondebirch ply for about 34 bucks a sheet (1/2 inch). I also saw a different type of birch ply, it looked like 3 layers of slightly larger than 1/8 board instead of the typical ply with several super thin layers. It was 40 dollars a sheet and the surface seems way nicer than the typical blondebirch ply.

Anyone ever finish this type of plywood? If so any pics? I plan on finishing the plywood and not veneering or painting.

I'm looking at making a TL speaker using this driver that I already own.

The TL follows these plans called the cyburg needles.

I don't know (sorry!) but I would only go to the finest lumber stores for any wood that is for my speakers. I doubt that Lowes would have the good stuff. I would go to the finest lumber stores even if it was for MDF for my speakers.

I'll have to check a lumbar yard not too far from my home. I also forgot to mention that the 40 dollar sheet of ply seemed to be completely void free while the 34 dollar sheet had voids in it.

We'll see what the lumbar yard has...I don't want to double the cost of the project because of the wood...I'll just go mdf if I end up not buying the plywood.

Remember to pay special attention to the actual thickness of the box store ply as they are not true 1/2 inch and or 3/4 inch, both are slightly thinner on the dimensions which can wreak havoc when following a DIY plan, as for finishing , these boards finish ok, not the best but they would pass for any furniture grade builds, but maybe not 1st class cabinets, one must be careful when sanding as the ply's are thin enough to sand right clean through to the next layer if not careful.
