Did I make a mistake- well atleast now?, by utilizing nearfield listening?

Hi all you avholics, I wanted to know if I made a mistake utilizing my overkill- svs sbs-01 bookshelfs 7 of them with my pc plus subwoofer as a computer system.

I am currently about 1-2 feet away from all my speakers and using my x-fi elite pro card to my rx-v2600 receiver's multi channel inputs to play my sound.

The reason I ask if because somebody said that you cannot utilize such a system effectively(home theater spakers), if you are just doing near-field listening, is that really true?

The sound seems detailed and fair enough compared to a set of hd-280 headphones I have used. Dts audio seems fine and so does multi-channel dvd audio.

Did I make a mistake doing this, I sold my logitech z-680 like system becuase I am using the svs sbs-01. The user "Greenjelly" had stated this, that it wasnt a good idea to use it becuase nobody tests it out. However, people are using av receivers aka dolby digital live with their computer systems these days which converts 5.1 audio to dolby digital and sends it via sp/dif to the receiver.

I would really love thougts on this, my cylinder subwoofer is just standing in a corner close to the walls.

Do room acoustics matter, because all I am doing is near-field listening, note that I am not utilizng the system in a small bedroom or basement.

If it sounds good to you then it doesn't matter what others think. I would certainly think that it would sound significantly better than the Logitechs that you sold.

As the SVS SBS-10 are sealed speakers I would think that they would work well as nearfield monitors. Is it overkill?, probably. But so long as you don't crank it, your ears won't bleed.:D

To clarify

I meant overkill for a computer system- so that it doesnt sound as it as intended, because I am sitting close to it.

I would think it would be pretty much like all systems, does it meet your audio goals and sounds good to you. The only thing that comes to mind is hearing damage if played really loud in the near field.

I think it's more the other way around. Using nearfield monitors for HT use is not recommended because the speakers are generally designed to be listened to from a few feet away.

I think you'll be fine using your HT speakers as nearfield. Bottom line as stated before, as long as you like the sound it should be fine.

im also using bookshelf speakers for my pc setup (though only 2.1)
screw what everybody else is saying, I like what I'm hearing ... from my jump from PC speakers to satellites to these bookshelves.

btw, I'm using the Polk Audio Rti4 as fronts and the Velodyne DLS-5000R (15") as my subwoofer. and I bought me a ton of war games ... :) hehe
