Did I just downgrade?

I have had a old system and decided to get new with HDMI. I did have a Pioneer VSX-1015 with a full Athena speaker set a pieced together from clearance items at BB. AS-C1 AS-B2's and a couple dipole rears and a 300watt 8" sub. I sold that set up to my little brother for $250 (I feel I gave him a decent deal). I know my recieve will be an upgrade with a Pioneer Elite SC-35. My question is I saw a good deal on Slickdeals and impulse bought Klipsch quentet SL set for $250. I just got them in the mail and my new reciever wont be here for close to a week. My old set is already gone so I can't compare them.

The new speakers just look so small. I am hoping I will be pleasantly surprised. I am also thinking about a def tech supercube III to fill in the low end. I would really like a 2 but can't justify $1000 sub for my bedroom.

You made very imbalanced purchase. One of top of the line pioneer avr with one of really low-end speakers. You had a lower-middle of road avr with inexpensive but very high value speakers of decent quality. Your current result is equivalent in cars is switching perfectly fine 90's Mustang GT to new Ferrari, but with VW Beetle engine ... Hey some people like the Beetle...

I was afraid of that. I bought the Athena set for under $400 in 04-05. I saw the $1000 msrp of the Klipsch set and lost my head. I opened them up last night and was underwhelmed with the shear size. I live in rural area. The closed Best Buy is 2.5 hrs away. I think that is the only audio store in Oklahoma City. I would love to audition speakers before I buy but I don't think that is possible. I lookde at some reviews of the SL's and they got pretty decent so I pulled the trigger. I should be able to sell them for that I have in them or close to it if I don't like them (likely). I know that I outclassed my speakers with my reciever. I wanted one that wouldn't be outdated to soon. I can't afford speakers that are on par with the AVR right now. I could swing a set for under a grand if there are some suggestions my ears are open.

Thats not doom and gloom. Klipsch speakers are pretty bright and some folks like it.
Using them without a sub is very sub-optimal, but you don't have to buy $1000 def-tek sub, there are plenty of good ID companies with better products for less money. Case in point: BIC PL-200 for $263

Speakers are more subject to personal preference than electronics. There's really no "better" or "worse" here than comparing blondes (please, no bloned jokes) to brunettes.

If you like the sound of these better than your old Athena speakers then you came out ahead. If not, well, at least you got a good price.

But, without a doubt, you're gonna NEED with those babies.

FWIW, I'm still using your Athena speakers in my HT. Click on the blue hyperlink in my sig if you're curious.

I have a set of F2's (dual 6" floor speakers) and like the sound of them. They are in the livingroom. My friend as some old Klipsch floors that sound great aswell so hopefully I like mine.

I am definitely going to get a sub. I think my listening area is fairly small at 13x13. My room 75-80% of a garage. The previous home owner put up a partition so there is still a garage area and converted the rest into a livible room. I am not super concerned with how loud it gets. I can't jam out much with a roommate. I am ususally only using mine when they are sleeping. I tend to go overkill so when I get a place of my own I will have a something that works in a larger area.

I am going with the PL-200. I got my AVR in and hooked up, burned in my speakers with 40+hrs of radio and tv at low to normal listening levels (26-37 on the volume). One think I noticed is just how fast the volume ramps up with these speakers or it maybe the reciever. 30 is a good watching tv volume 35 is nice to sleep to .16 is split your ears painful, but at 50 out of 80 they are silence. I don't know if it is the speakers or the amp but it is definitely louder than the old system.

I haven't tried any digital format listening since I don't have a sub. I don't see a point in really testing the sound of a new system with have the sound not there.

I the Klipsch set is super sharp but the 3.5in drivers jsut aren't going to produce the full sound my old 6.5in speakers did. that is what a decent sub will help with. Im no audiophile. My last hearing test said that I have lost 15% of my hearing in my left ear and 10% in my right. I guess that is what a loud car without A/C will get you. Driving extended periods of time with the window down is very bad for your hearing.

THanks for all the help
