Hi everybody,

BTW : Yes I looked at the pdf in the articles section but my equipment seems different from the ones depicted.

A lil about me. I'm 18 (will be 19 the 15 th of january) and i'm studying in mechanical engineering. I don't know much about home theater and stuff like this but I usually learn pretty fast when somebody explains :D Ohh and i'm from quebec so I speak french and english is my secondary language.

So i'm new to the forum. Yeah well for christmas I got my first HTIB from my parents. It's a Yamaha YHT-160 (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/HTIB/HTIB_160_1.htm and they also bought a yamaha dvd .. a DVD-S550 http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/DVD_CD/DVDS550.htm. I don't know much and it's my first ''home theater'' so I don't know if it's good or not but I got it as a x-mas present and I won't complain about this even if it's not the best.

I started installing it in my room. My parents actually boutght everything that they had to buy in order to install it (at least everything that the seller told them they needed). So I had lots of speaker wire, 1 X S-Video cable and 1 coaxial cable. I wired all the speakers as they should and then came the time to hook up the coax and s-video cable. (in order to be as clear as possible please take a look at the links I posted at the end of the post where you can see the backplates of my equipment). I saw the coax. jack on the DVD, so I hooked up one end of the coax to this jack. Then I checked out on the AV receiver and noticed there was no jack for DVD coax. only one jack for CD coax. so I hooked the other end of the coax. wire to the cd coax wire. And then I hooked the S-Video from the DVD directly to the TV as I did not see any s-video input/output on the AV receiver.

I inserted a DVD in the dvd player and I had the image but no sound. The AV was in DVD mode. So I figured that if I wired the coax cable to the CD coax input on the AV I should try to put the AV receiver on CD mode while still listening to the DVD. Then I had sound. I basically set-up the av receiver in order to get ''good'' sound but now i'm worried.

What am I worried about ? well I'm worried that I won't get a real 5.1 dolby digital surround sound (like a 3d sound, you know when a spaceship passes in the back when watching star wars at the movie theater, you hear it from behind). I think cd and dvd might not be encoded the same way and that a dvd that's audio output is brought in the AV receiver through the audio input might not be interpreted correctly from the AV receiver (that last sentence might not be easy to get but.... try to get it :p ). So basically my questions are.

FIRST : Did I connect everything correctly

SECOND : Will I be able to get reall dolby digital surround effect wired like that or will I have to buy a really expensive optical wire to wire the dvd to the AV receiver ??

THIRD : With my equipment is there a way to listen normal analog cable TV with my home theater system or can I only listen to DVD's and CD's with it ?

Well that was a pretty long post. I know that might be dull to read and to answer for you gurus out there but I really need your help.

Thanks a lot

Please refer to these links to see the backplate of the DVD and AV receiver:

EDIT : and my TV only has s-video and 8 RCA out/input (2 video, 3 +, 3-)

OK. I have the same receiver and I am also a noob so I know what you're going through. I'm 16, and I just got this system with the HTR-5830SL and a JBL speaker package (its basically the YHT-160 with an upgraged speaker package). Firstly, it doesn't matter whether the coax is labeled CD or DVD, it's the same, and yes, you experience the same sound. My DVD player (a Panasonic S29) doesn't even have an optical output, but if your's does, why not get a tad better sound quality and upgrade because you can get one for under $20 at Best Buy.

Well anyways, yes, you can get true surround sound formats (Dolby Digital and DTS) from the CD input using a coaxial cable.

Secondly, yes, you can watch tv and take advantage of your system. Just output rca cables from your audio out on your tv and input them into the D-TV/CBL input on your receiver, and obviously have the mode set to D-TV/CBL. Unless you have digital cable/sattellite, you can't get digital sound so you should use some of the system's built in decoders such as Pro Logic. If you do have digital cable/sattelite, then use the digital outputs on the box to input it into the receiver either using a coaxial cable or an optical cable. Don't forget, your system also has AM/FM radio.

Hope this helps.

As 5.1 DTS guy said, it should work that way, but in the manual, it should tell you how to re-assign the input from cd to dvd. If you're studying mechanical engineering, you should be able to work with the manual. :) Also, most dvd players ship from the factory with DTS turned off. Go into the dvd player's setup menus, and set the audio output to "Bitstream", instead of PCM.

Once you've done this, you set the receiver to "Digital Auto". Then when you insert a dvd into player, the receiver will automatically go to DD 5.1 soundtrack. If there's a DTS track, you'll need to manually choose it in the movie's Audio Setup or Languages menus.
Good luck!

Slitch,

I had to do something similar with my LaserDisc player. My LD player has an AC3-RF out which is COAX, that goes into RF Demodulator. My old demodulator only had a COAX out. Any my receiver has OPT for DVD & CD, and COAX for TV. So I had to plug it in to TV, since CD doesn't have any video inputs on my old receiver. But all the surround info came through fine.

Eventually I got another RF Demodulator that supported both, and ran the OPT to the TV inputs on the receiver.

I'm looking to replace my old receiver with a new one sometime in the new year.

looks good but only I have one problem the surround speakers are so weak I can't even hear them. I'll try to fiddle with the settings in order to correct this
