Dialog unintelligible in room with Cathedral ceiling

Folks, in our new home we have a very old home theater in our living room with cathedral ceilings. For music it's great! However, for dialog it's terrible. We are having a rough time deciphering what people are saying, of course, actors seem to mumble a lot these days. Is there some sort of speaker placement, setting, anything that can make us hear the words!

Thanks!

You can do a couple things:

1. Invest in some matching acoustical material for your ceiling

2. Raise the center channel a bit in volume (assuming you have this option and are running things in at least Dolby surround mode)

3. Make sure the center channel and main speakers are toed in (pointing more or less at the listening position)

4. Ensure that you have some kind of floor covering (area rug) in the event that your floor is tile or wood and not carpet.

Before I give you my opinion and a possible fix, I would like to know:
Where are the speakers located in respect to the seating area and how high is the cathedral ceiling?
