ok i've found the sony str-dg1000 can handle audio via the hdmi port, can it decode 7.1 that way or just 5.1?

Yes it can handle 7.1 LPCM. It will also handle anything less than that such as PCM, Dolby formats, and DTS formats. Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, and other receivers have these features as well in similarly priced models.
