Determining Pre-Amp output of a Receiver

Meausring Pre-Amp output of a Receiver

I read these posts all the time, but this is my first. Typically I am able to find the information that I'm looking for by sifting through this sight (which is great, by the way).

I'm using a Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX as a pre-amp for my B&K AV5125. The manual of the '54' says that the line level output/impedence is 335 mV/2.2ohms respectively. This doesn't seem quite right for a pre-amp level, isn't it typically around 1 V? In comparing it with the Yamaha RX-V2500 these numbers are more in line with the REC output as opposed to the pre-amp. Even my older Denon AVR3300 has a pre-amp output of 1.2 V

So my question is: How can I determine the actual voltage output of the pre-am in my Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX? I phoned Pioneer Tech support and all they could do was quote the manual. However, they did say that the volume control actually acts as an attenuator (but I don't really think I'm sure that I know what they mean.

Thanks for your help.

Brian
