Destroy Internet Explorer

After reading THIS article I don't know what to think. Unless I have read it wrong, the "Explorer Destroyer" campaign is encouraging websites to block users of IE from viewing their site. That is rediculous.

I'm not a fan of plain old IE, I don't use it. I do, however, use Maxthon which is based on IE. I like Maxthon far better than Firefox and I don't know what I'd do without it. I don't get any spyware, viruses, pop-ups, or ads of any kind. All it takes is common sense as far as I am concerned. The adblocker in maxthon blocks everything from Inellitxt to floaties to flash ads. The anti-IE people are going too far.

What do you think?

This won't affect 95% of the population or more. You have to remember that the number of people that know what they're doing with a computer is but a fraction of the total computer users. I would guess that at least 50% or more of computer users don't even know what the Firefox browser is. These people buy there computer with the stock IE browser and away they go.

The problem is that these anti-IE people are producing applications for websites that will "pester" people until they install FireFox.

I don't want to be pestered. Maxthon would be seen as IE by these applications.

Been there, done that... no thanks.

What can IE do that Mozilla Firefox can't? It's just a browser, so I don't see the problem.

I've tried FF in place of IE. FF very fast to begin with but eventually I saw no difference in speed. Now using IE again.

Yes...well maybe. Depending on your modem, processing power and the site(s) that you're visiting. However, with FF and Linux (or Redhat), you'll never have the problems designated solely for Windows and IE. Let's not overlook that critical point. I currently use both (Windows w/ IE and Linux w/ FF), and have no problems with FF. A browser is a browser is a browser.

100% agree. Not to mention FF is supposedly brickwalled from the OS.

I have nothing against Firefox, I just prefer Maxthon. Note, I said I do not use IE. It is not feature rich enough. Maxthon has many useful features, and yes, many of them are available in FF through extensions but Maxthon comes with them all bundled. Screenshot HERE.

I can't stand not having mouse gestures, tabs, AdHunter, tab aliases, double-click tab close/open, scroll wheel tab selection, utilities bar, the list could go on and on and on....

I actually made THIS video for demonstration on another forum.

If websites start pestering me for not using Firefox I will not be happy.

I use FF. Tab browsing is nice. I've not had one popup since installing FF compared to IE. I do run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Hijack-This just to keep everything spic n span. I have no plans to go back to IE in the near future.

Okay, so the website I run that I WANT people to come to visit, I should be installing some garbage onto the denies them access and promotes some other program that isn't paying me to advertise them... or just gives me a buck everytime someone actually switches?

I expect that the 13 year olds will be thrilled to put it in their websites, but annoying people isn't what I am looking to do and would almost immediately drive me away from any website that I visit.

In the last 10 years I haven't had any real complaints with IE. I remember Netscape... I remember those who SWORE by anything that wasn't IE. A lot of people have since switched to IE and use it every day.

I am a software developer and use IE, Firefox, and IE 7.0 beta (running a beta of Windows Vista). The article is just plain silly and i would not give it the time of day. A browser is a browser. Personally, i like IE a lot, but Firefox is great too. Think of it like a glass of wine, whatever tastes best to you is what you should enjoy!

How about auto launch a PDF file. My version of Firefox (1.5.0.2) won't do this simple task.

Someone who's familiar with Firefox - can you help me. Anytime I'm in my email account, and try to hit the aprostrophie key ('), I get a search bar at the bottom of my screen. Khellandros who's pretty familiar with FF told me it was part of FF's browser, but wasn't sure how to get rid of that prompt. It drives me nuts.

Another fault I had with FF was it's inability to use the extended windows charactor set while typing.

Example: The "cent" symbol is "alt 0162" on the numeric keypad. I would type a response to a post stating "Just my 2¢" and the response window would close at "alt 0" with no way to go back. INFURIATING!!

As a professional software architect, I think it would a horrible decision to deny over half the potential users on the internet access to your site just because of a stupid grudge against a browser.
Also as contributor to the XHTML spec, I can tell you that IE is more standards compliant than Firefox, which is one thing that the Firefox supporters tout so highly. I'm not saying that Firefox isn't a good browser (I use either depending on the day) it's just not more compliant than IE.

IE works fine. It's just a little virus prone, and slow. Since I got used to tabs and fast response from FF, I find I can't use IE. I don't expect I'll go back.

As someone who has writen an awful lot of software over the years, I can tell you that Microsoft's approach to security over the last decade has been unforgivable. They are only now starting to get their act together, after years of leaving the barn door open to every horse thief on the net. And IE's been a big part of that misery. If nothing else, dumping IE makes a nice symbolic act.
