I have played many (hundreds) of DVDS and CDS etc. on my Denon5900, and they all look and sound excellent, except the first disc of LOR return of the king (extended vers.) I have exchanged the discs 3 times, with the same problem, only on the first disc. When the disc loads it makes a 'shuddering' noise, as if it were hitting something. This same disc plays fine on my old sony DVD player. Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

I don't have the LOTR discs (yet) that you talk about, but I think I do know about the sound you are experiencing.

For some discs, my Onkyo dvd player makes a growling kind of noise; literally sounds like a dog or cat growling. I assume the discs that do that are slightly out of balance and the vibrations are translated into that annoying whirring kind of sound. In my case though, it doesn't seem to affect the picture or sound (and only occurs on a few discs).

Usually it is a problem with the disc... scratches, salt from potato chips (seriously), heat warpage etc.

3 different discs? At first I was inclined to think that you had found the bad batch of discs. But that is pretty doubtful. Not impossible, just very doubtful.

The reason for playing fine on your old Sony is that the drive system in the Sony may not be as tight (worn parts, greater design tolerances for bad discs etc) versus the Denon.

Try a different "new" generation player. There may be a problem with the discs that makes them incompatible with newer players, or as noted, the Sony just may be more tolerant of the disc.
