I'm just working through the setup of my new Denon X4700. I've got it (mostly) configured in my "main" theater room for 7.1.2 - (center / L - R fronts / L- R Surrounds / L - R rear surrounds / L - R ceiling atmos ) - so using all 9 powered channels.
If I'm understanding the manual correctly, I can hook another pair of speakers for a second "zone" - to the "Height2 L/R" connectors. Since there's only 9 amplified channels, my first "assumption" is that I couldn't use Main and Zone2 at the same time (since that would require 11 powered channels)
So far though, I haven't been able to "configure" zone2 - when I select it (I see it powered on Zone2) it still outputs all the sound on my main / home theater channels.
So before I struggle too long on this... I wanted to be sure I've got this right, and that's even something I can do?
(or because I'm using all 9 channels for the theater setup, I can't use the Zone2 at all?)
Thanks for any insight / experience anyone has on this! (I also assume the setup for a 4500 is the same..)

You're correct if you have a 7.1.2 setup you're using all your amp channels and to use zone 2 at the same time you'll need an external amp on the zone 2 pre-outs.

yeah... that makes sense, and I actually don't want to use them at the same time.
I'd like to turn off main / turn on Zone2 - but when I do this (and maybe I'm not actually turning off "main" - but I think I am..) - I'm still getting all the sound out of the 9 main speakers (and nothing from the 2 I have connected to the Height2 channels)

Is there a setting in amp assign that only allows zone 2? My older Denon 4520 has a custom amp assign mode where you could enable zone 2 I think....but have never tried. Or just get an external amp and then do both if you wanted to....
