I am trying to decide between the Denon 2809 vs. Yamaha rx-v1900 for home theater. Are they pretty much the same? The Yammy has a bit more watts, but not sure if I would ever crack the 115 or 130 anyways. I heard the Denon Audyssey is much better than the Yamaha version.

Anyone have a preference between the two?

Thanks!

Well, as a qualified Yamaha Nut and Addict of sorts (although in my case I just have a fetish for 90's Yamaha gear :D ), I'd say go for the Yamaha being my nuttyness. But.... let me keep going before you take that answer :D

Build quality on both receivers should be about the same. However, my observations have been (with the lower end receivers anyways) that lower end Denons look cheaper than a comparable Yamaha. However, you start getting into the model range you are looking at, and the cheapness factor goes away.

The Denon has Binding Posts for the Zone 2/3 back whereas the Yamaha does not. Denon also has room-to-room remote, an easier scheme for the composite hookups, and it's made in Japan. To me, those are big pluses.

However, the orange Yamaha Display makes it easy to read at night, and the Yamaha has one more TOSLINK input. The Yamaha remote (I think) is better (be less likely to break with no touch screen), the faceplates that Yamaha makes are something they like to pride themselves on (they usually make everything solid aluminum, even the volume knobs (save for the lower end series)).

So, if you don't care about a touch remote, Zone 2/3 binding post construction, or Made in Japan (which I cannot verify if the 1900 is made in Japan) go for the Yamaha.
The Denon will be a better choice if you are looking for a long term hub in which to deal with as much as possible.

I'd probably go with the Denon myself. Denon's generally have better amp sections and the inclusion of Audyssey features is a nice bonus. Both are nice receivers.

The power difference is insignificant. This is because, in order to get a 3 dB increase in sound, you need to double the power. So the difference between a 10 watt and 20 watt amp is practically the same as between 50 and 100 watts or between 115 and 230 watts. The difference between 130 and 115 watts is going to be practically inaudible.

In general, I prefer Yamaha for their price to performance ratio, but I have absolutely nothing against Denon, which makes fine gear.

I suggest you go to each web site, download the owner's manuals for each, and read all the details of each, and decide based upon features and how each works. Both should be good receivers.

I would pick the Yamaha, as it has HD radio, but that may or may not matter to you.

Listen to them

I think if you narrowed it down to both of those units and feature wise they both meet your requirements, then finally it comes down to listening to them both and purchasing the one which sounds best to you.

I vote for Denon but would step up to the 3808. I had the Yammy 3800 and didn't like it but it was related to features not performance. Either one would be fine if they have the features you want/need.

What extra do I get from the denon 3808 or next step up yamaha aside from the ethernet? Is it worth the extra $$$?
