I'm looking to get a new DVD player, to ditch my 3 year old Sony 5-disc DVD/CD player. I've been reading that players are getting better and better, especially in terms of their audio performance...also, I've read that 5-disc changers, due to their constantly moving parts, have a tendency to wear quicker. And lets be honest...I want a new toy after having just bought an entire new HT set up, with the exception of a new DVD player.

But here's my dilemma. I'm looking at a used Rotel that I could get for just over $400 and then there's the b-stock Denon's on ebay for about $500. The biggest difference I can see is the capability of the Denon to do SACD. Both can play DVD-A. With that said, however, I'd like to point out that I don't own a single SACD disc. I do own a few DVD-A discs, but those were mostly by accident. Along those lines, I do however believe that having a player capable of playing DVD-A/SACD may spark my interest. My question is, do I need the Denon to play both? Is it okay to go with the Rotel, save a hundred bucks and just have DVD-A. Both have 5.1 channel audio out, which my current player does not and that's mainly what I'm looking for (I do have a few of those discs). Or, is one or the other simply a better player and I should go with it (Denon over Rotel or vice versa).

Just asking around as I'm ready to get something new and want to fish for opinions. Thanks in advance.

I'm not pleased with the sound quality of many CD's I own, but when I've tried different CD players, I really can't discern any difference in their sound quality. I haven't tried any real top-end CD players, and I only own a fairly basic system (B&W DM 601's/Denon AVR -2802). I have tried playing some bad sounding CD's on a pair of old (1970's) Tannoy studio HPD-315A's monitors, with no improvement in sound quality.

I'd go with the SACD capable player, as it will give you something new to play around with.

Denon makes some of the highest rated players on the market.

I've got a 2910 and it plays SACD wonderfully-where did you hear that it didn't?

Bryan...firing up the SACD of Pink's DSotM when I get home...
