Greetings everyone,
I am currently in the middle of an idea that I can not seem to find any answers for.
My equipment consists of a Denon Avr X6400H and a Denon Avr X4200W. My idea is to use the pre outs on the 6400 and power my front speakers with the 4200W thus creating more power for the remaining amps on the 6400 and dedicating the 4200 to my front channels only.
Setting are as follows,
Amp Assign is on 11.1 running 10 speakers and 2 subwoofers
Floor layout is 5Ch & SB
Height is 4 Ch
Layout is Front Height & Rear Height.
The pre outs on the 6400 run from pre amp out to Cab/ Sat in. No reason I picked this input. Does it make a difference?

AT THIS POINT
I should be be seeing a pre out selector sub menu allowing me to select front speakers but it is not coming up.
Right now Zones 2 and 3 are selected as Pre amp out with no way to change it.
Has anyone ever run in to this?
I am stumped and was hoping someone may have some answers here.

Thanks everyone.

Trying to use two receivers together like this is a fruitless effort. Level matching and dual volume controls will not work well at all. Sell the 4200 and just buy a two channel amp if that is what you want.

Actually it does work is you cover the infrared sensor on one amp. I agree it’s a rudimentary way of doing it. I have tried to sell the 4200 with no interest and can not afford an amp I deem worthy. So this is the way it has to be until things change I did manage to find a Crown Com Tech 1610 and thought problem solved until I discovered the Crown is not a stereo amp. It a commercial amp used in large areas such as churches.

I did a very similar thing with a newer Denon AVR for features and used an older, beefy, Yamaha AVR just as an amp.

Worked fine, with different brands the Harmony Remote made turn On/Off an eady automated thing.

I set the Yamaha (aka pwr amp) to pure/direct and the volume to -0dB (aka 100%) so all volume control was done by the Denon AVR with no EQ.

The pre outs should be live with that model and work for any channels. Do not connect speaker wire to terminals corresponding to channels that are being powered by an external amp by way of pre out ports. The X6400H processes and powers 11 channels and has but 11 channel speaker terminals. You cannot assign pre outs with this model like you can with the X6700H. That model processes 13 channels. While it has 13 speaker channel terminals, it can power only 11 and the user can select to have an external amp power the Fronts or Height speakers. This is similar to the X4700W that processes 11 channels, has 11 channel speaker terminals but can only power 9 of them. That just can't be done with the X6400H.

So, with amp assign at 11.1, you should be good to go and just connect the X4200 to the X6400H using the Front Pre Outs and leaving the Front Speaker terminals of the X6400H unconnected. As was mentioned, the X4200W should be in Pure Direct or Direct mode to avoid processing of the two channels it will power. You can leave it in Direct mode so you have a front panel display and rename the source input to "FRONTS."

Might even think about a system reset of the 4200 to clear it out so to speak. Too bad they had cut off the multich analog inputs by that model, that was the best way to use on as just power amp. Just need to find the gain balance that works well before you re-run Audyssey on the 6400.
