Denon/Pioneer/Sony = an amazing HDMI experience

Hi folks,

just to keep you posted on my first dive into the HDMI world, last week I was in Chicago for a business trip, where I've found a PIONEER DVD, which seems pretty uncommon to find locally. Such model is DV-696-AV.

Does anybody knows about this model?

Well, such dvd has HDMI port, with upconversion, plus SACD / DVD-A and it's dual-voltage from factory & region-free as well (modified, as the original box mentions zone 3. It's made in Thailand & came with 2 manuals - 1 in English & the other in Chinese - I guess).

To make long story short, I've plugged the Pio on my Denon 3806, and from it to the Sony TV (RP LCD KDF E42A10) and tell you what, it was a snap from the very first time (I've previously assigned the HDMI ports on 3806 & the Pio). PQ really improved a lot. Brought wife & kids and they all went WOW!

What I have also noted is that my 2 other dvd's (component out only), are taking advantage out of the HDMI out from the 3806 to the TV, as picture is more natural now. I was not expecting that to happen, though.

All the audio (multichannel, etc), now flows thru HDMI normally, without any issue. Furthermore, DVD-A also plays thru HDMI (SACD doesn't).

Needless to say that I'm pretty happy with my new toys!

Cheers / Avliner.

HDMI version 1.1 supports DVD-A but does not support SACD. Version 1.2 and 1.3 do support SACD.

Its good to see things are working well for you, thats how it should be, just plug it in and everything works.

cheers:)

Macca350,

thanks for your comments.
Yeah, it's pretty cool when everything runs smooth at the very 1st time!

Matter of fact, I forgot to mention another good thing that happened, after the HDMI connections; there is, now I can see not only the full OSD data, but the VOLUME CONTROL as well (couldn't before).

Another thing I've found is that in the original carton box it's printed the following:

NOTICE - FOR FOREIGN TOURISTS IN JAPAN.
THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR USE IN JAPAN.

Any clues??

Cheers / Avliner.
