Hi All!
Got a question, I was thinking of upgrading my system
I have a Pioneer D1S, Pair of 130Watt Omage Genesis Speakers, 5.0 Setup
front & back Prolinear 6Watt speakers.
I was thinking of going with
either Pioneer VSX-74TCVi, Yamaha RXV 4600B, or Denon AVR3805
I live in montreal, Canada and all stores are Futureshop(BestBuy) or Dumolin
they also carry Maranz
Can you guys suggest something ?
my budget is about 1500-2000$ canadian
Thanx

I think any of them would suit you well, if you want HDMI that rules out the Denon, unless you step up to the 3806. I just purchased a Yamaha RX-V1600 and I absolutely love it, I'm sure the 4600 is just as good sounding. I don't have any experience with the higher end Denon or Pioneer units though.

For HDMI, consider the Yamaha RX-V2600 or 1600, Denon 3806, or one of the new Pioneer models.

You can probably get a better price online shipped to Canada then in your local future shop.

If you don't need HDMI, take a close look at the Yamaha RX-V2500 and Denon 3806. You should be able to find them for about $700 US.

Hey m3ki, I have the Pioneer Elite VSX-56TXi. This is my first Pioneer and it's amazing. Very warm, large soundstage, very clear and detailed. I use my system for 90% home theater. I did a lot of research and read alot of reviews and decided on this unit. I too was looking at H/K and Yamaha.

I have read some reviews on the VSX-74TXVi and I understand the amp section is not as good as the 56TXi or any of the older models. I know the 74TXVi has more bell's and whistles but to me, one of the most important things to look at when buying a receiver is the amp section for sound quality, reserve power and head room.

Here's a link to a 56TXi that is for sale on eBay right now, the seller is out of Quebec, check it out. The picture is the 59TXi which is a step above but the specs are for the 56TXi - http://cgi.ebay.ca/Pioneer-Elite-VSX-56TXI-AV-Multi-Channel-Receiver_W0QQitemZ5836772581QQcategoryZ67784QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Anyways, my 2 cents.

POLKPIONEER SYSTEM

Receiver - Pioneer Elite VSX-56TXi
Amp - Pioneer Elite M-10X
DVD Player - Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi
Front Speakers - polkaudio RTi70's
Center Channel - polkaudio CS400i
Sub - polkaudio PSW202
Surround Speakers - polkaudio R15's (7.1 System)
Speaker Cable - Unity Monster Link Biwire
(Fronts & Center)

I personally have the Denon AVR-985S (bascially the same as the 2805). I absolutely love it. The price is decent for Denon products especially for what you get out of them. They are powerful, very little distortion, and have a lot of nifty and handy features. ALthough I have no expirience with the other receivers can reccomend the Denon from expirience.

Hey,....I'm from Toronto, Canada. From what I know, Montreal stuffs are more expensive. Period. If you get stuff from the US, no warranty. The warranty only applies to USA. If you shop hard enough, you can get a very good price. Boxing day is coming, wait until then and make a store an offer.

Tell you what, I got my Yamaha RXV for 1100 CAD taxes incl. That's 11 months ago. With warranty. If I was to buy from N.Y. online, the best price at that time was 750 USD, and have to pay for shipping, 50 USD and Canada custom, and it will be the same and no warranty.

Do you have HDTV with HDMI? If no, no need for HDMI. I don't have it. I will get one in 1.5 to 2 yrs, so you should buy what you need. Buying the future, is like pay the future and cannot enjoy now.

Denon or Yamaha - it's like Honda or Toyota. Pioneer is like Nissan. Everyone's eyes are slightly different. Have a test yourself and decide.
Check out European brands too...like Arcam and Rotel if you have 2K to spend. Arcam 300 is $ 2000 CAD. Yamaha 2500 is 1100, Denon 3805 is 1400. I went with the best price for your money, bcos I had to save up get the speakers as well - and DVD player. I ended up getting Yamaha DVDC750 for 300 CAD plus taxes. To me, Denon and Yamaha is very close - cannot go wrong, but I went went Yamaha bcos of the overall value. Cheers.

Denon 3805's prices are dropping right now, to about $1200 or less. If the local dealer price matches other authorized dealers then go to baybloorradio.com, and look through their flyers. One has an ad for the Denon at $1199 plus a coupon at the bottom for $50 off. Yammie 2500 should be about a grand, 2600 is about $1250 the only time I saw one and it was on sale, or so the sign said. You can also look into a Nad 770 for about $2k plus tax. The Arcam is a a nice unit as mentioned. With the kind of money you are looking at spending I think you should go through the yellowpages, or go to dealer websites and look up some smaller shops in your area to go and look at equipment. They will carry brands that chain stores don't.

On a side note I'm dying to get back to Montreal again. I have cousins out there and the night life is the frigging best. Beautiful women everywhere, amazing bar scene, and not the dangerous feel you get in downtown Toronto. Now if only I spoke French. The last time I was there (about 2 months now) I wound up in the coolest pub I've ever been in. Outdoor patio that looks like a rain forest and that had 80 ft walls with vines growing up them. I spent the whole night doing shots with our amazingly hot French waitress. Ahh, Quebec.

You have Montreal pegged. Great party place, beautiful women, night life. Crappy hockey team though  Go Leafs!! I am originally from Windsor Ontario but moved out east about four years ago to Halifax. You want pubs, this is the place. Live music, great nightlife, waterfront, cruise ships, Keith's Brewery, haha!! Everyone is so laid back, two large universities in the city, Dalhousie and Saint Mary's so lot's of women. Oh ya, were talking about receivers, right..

I agree, listen and let your ears decide. I love the Elite 56TXi and found it at an amazing price on-line out of Toronto, full Canadian warranty. I had an old Sony so this unit is leaps and bounds above the Sony and a just a step below Pioneer Elite's flagship the 59TXi, mind you there is a huge difference between the two.

Let me slip in something about receiver real quick so I can get back to talking about the bar scene in Canada. I forgot to mention Pioneer Elite models. That VSX-74TXVi is getting some killer reviews and you ought to be able to snag one for about $1300. MSRP of $1600.

I might like the night life in Montreal, but for warm, cozy fun with tons of friendly and outgoing people you willk never beat Eastern Canada. My experiences have always been amazing out east. I have to say though, Newfoundland is still my favourite.

Two boys are playing hockey on a pond in the park in Toronto, when one
Is attacked by a rabid Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes
his stick, wedges it down the dog's collar and twists, breaking the dog's
neck.

A reporter who was strolling by sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. "Young Leafs Fan Saves friend from vicious animal," he starts writing in his notebook.
"But I'm not a Leafs fan," the little hero replied.
"Sorry, since we are in Toronto, I just assumed you were," said the reporter.......and starts again. "Little Jays fan rescues friend from horrific attack" he continued writing in his notebook.
"I'm not a Jays fan either," the boy said. "I just assumed everyone in Toronto was either a Leafs or Jays fan. What team, do you root for?" the reporter asked. "I'm a Montreal Canadians fan." The child said.

The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes, "Little
French Bastard from Montreal Kills beloved family pet."

I agree, the 74 appears, to be an awsome unit (all the bells and whistles) but the amp section from what I understrand is not quite as good as the older Elite units, not to say that you could notice a difference. I have not been able to compare the two side by side.
With the new Pioneer flagship due out in January 06, I wonder how much the 59 will drop in price. It's odd, the 56 and the new 74 are still about the same price, not sure why.

I have not made it to NFLD but I have heard many stories. I worked with a guy straight from the rock and he was hilarious. Between his accent and NFLD sayings every day was a hoot!

Great joke!!! I am going to send this to some buddies!!!!!

No agrument here, I tell ya though, Windsor is not too bad. Have to cater to those American's you know.

That's the one thing that we don't have here out east, strip joints. Moncton is the only place worth checking out. I was surprised to find this, when I was in Halifax you have so many students that they should fill the joint.

Apogee, you are sooo right. I remember school trips to Montreal when I was 17 & 18. Never carded the first time, had ID the second. Two more reasons Montreal rocks, drinking age of 18 and bars open later than most provinces.

I was 18, and my cousin in Montreal took me to the St. Catherine 'supersex', and it was like a DREAM for a teenager - man, the girls are all like Models....lean and nice. NOTHING like Pam Anderson (silicone ****).....real thing - just nice. Toronto does not have that kind of girls, like of 'sick' here.

cheers

I better stop here before the admin shuts down this thread.
