I have a Denon AVR-1603 and there's a lot to like about it. It decodes all the 5.1 formats. It doesn't do the 6.1 and 7.1 formats, but right now there's little software in those formats, and how much of your living room do you want to give over to speakers, anyhow? With efficient speakers, it's excellent--I was shocked at the improvement in sound quality over my 9-year old Onkyo receiver. It's best with efficient speakers--my power-hungry NHT ST-4s are a little too much for it. It doesn't do video switching--if something comes into an S-video input, it can only be output on S-video as well. It has it's limitations, but for the price, I think it's a terrific piece of gear.
