My friend has a Denon dvd-557 and an Onkyo dv-sp404 he wants to sell me. They both upconvert, so which player is better?

Can they both meet your other needs? Flexibility of inputs and outputs, sound processing capability, power, etc. Price?

They probably perform the same, but I would pick Denon because I associate Denon with higher-end and Onkyo with middle-range.

Yeah, they basically have identical features.
Then I'd go with whichever you like better or whichever feels like a better deal to you. My personal opinion is that Onkyo and Denon are on similar footing in general when it comes to quality...sure, it varies from year to year and component to component. Without knowing the specific quality of either of those components (which some here might, but I don't), I'd say go with either one.

Why, how much power does your DVD player have, and inputs? Did you even read the OP?:D

I believe the Denon 557 has a slight edge if you plan to use the analog out. Other than that, they're probably the same.

Yes, I did but must have passed over those 3/4 letters;) You know how the brain can trick you, right?
Just be careful you don't fall into that trap, or I will not let you forget it:D:D

I welcome a "call out" and I know I will mess up at some point, so you will get your chance.:D

What the heck is a "call out?" And besides, what kind of question is "what kind of power does a dvd player have?

Why must a serious, honest post be screwed up by mindless chatter?
I was really hoping for some honest opinions instead of childish rants and trolls like I am more accustomed to on IGN's 12 year old infested video game boards.

Thanks for screwing up a perfectly good post.

Does anyone have a real opinion to offer? I'm still interested in those.

Thanks, -LBrize

No need to get in a tiffy.;) You post like we are getting paid to answer your question, if we were getting paid you can bet this forum would be very serious. Time on the forum is leisure time. We don't mean to wreck your thread.

To follow the trend I would recommend Denon over Onkyo for upconverting DVD players. What is your budget (how much are these players being offered to you for?)? It may be more logical to purchase an HD DVD player at this point as they do a great job upconverting and you have the ability to play true high definition HD DVDs.:)
