Denon front height speakers

This is probably pointless to post without the receiver model, I’ll put that in when I get home tonight.

I hooked up my sub last night, reran Audyssey and set my speakers to small. That’s when I noticed the menu for assigning by B channel. It looks like I can use it to bi amp my front speakers or assign it as front height speakers. The receiver doesn’t have Atmos, it’s listed as 7.1 channel and that doesn’t include front height speakers. It looks like it’s an early form of 7.1.2 but what does it do? Does it have some encoding for front height or does that simply create a larger soundstage?

If it is a pre-Atmos avr front height was merely an option in lieu of rear surrounds. Passive biamping with an avr is pretty much a waste of time/wire.

Yeah what HD said.

Normally you could choose front height or rear surround, and the “upmixer” was pro logicIIZ(height) or a pliix(rear surround).

In pliiz the “height” content was matrixed out of the L/R channels and basically just added some ambiance and heightened the sound stage. Ime, PLIIx was the better of the 2. Some enjoyed PLIIZ but having atmos for almost 5years now, we’re waaaay past that IMO.

That’s the exact information I was looking for, thanks. I knew there had to be a differentiation just didn’t know what it was, thanks again! Knowing that I may eventually run it with front height speakers. My daughters wall would be where rears go, probably not getting the wife to sign off on that. May as well plan for an eventual 5.2.4 as I could use the front height channel even before getting an Atmos receiver.
