Guys: a quick question: i came across this DVD player for USD 297 plus taxes (8.5%). It's a display unit and they're selling with a full warranty, manuals, remote plus they throw this Pioneer CLD201S Laserdisc player for free. The Denon looks brand new but I can't tell how much has been used by this dealer. I'm looking for an upgrade for my Onkyo DVCP802, especially for SACD and DVD-A. What do you think???. Suggestions and comments are very welcome.

Come on guys....give me some advice. When it comes to DVDs, I'm not much into movies but concerts. I like music more than anything. By the way I just bought the Roxy Music "Avalon" SACD...the sound quality in my modest system is just awesome.

I can't help you out with that one. You might get more responses if you post under the "CD/DVD & Misc Hardware" section, though. Good luck.

alot of times, if you can get into the factory service area of the player you can find the amount of hours the laser has on it.

I'd look at the deal this way: how much is it brand new vs the $300 they are offering it at and how much value, if any, is a 'free' laserdisc player?

If you have no laserdiscs and no plan to ever obtain any, consider that part of the package to have a worth of zero. So the decision becomes whether or not the used player is worth the price of $300. What fraction of the new price is $300? If it is a substantial discount, I'd say it is worth it (if the player meets your needs) and you can always try to sell the laserdisc player to reduce the total cost even further.

Thanks guys for your response. I do own a couple of LDs, in fact I posted a few weeks ago about a LD player deal I came by at the same shop, and since I'd love to play my Wham! "Foreign Skies" LD again, I gave it a thought. When I stopped by the same shop yesterday, I came across this DVD player. My question was more focused on the fact if I was going to see any improvement going from the Onkyo I have to the Denon in regards to sound quality (I don't really mind the video part for that matter). I don't really know how much a new one costs, but I guess it's pretty close to USD 700 (I've seen some close to USD 500 on Ebay, apparently brand new). The LD player comes as a plus at no price, so it makes it more interesting, but again it's not the price or the LD for free, it's how much of an improvement if any if I go Denon.

Well the end of this story is that I went to the same shop today and I ended up buying a Denon 2930CI for USD 748 (plus the LD player for free). One feature that really caught my attention was that you could play PAL DVDs (I've come across some very good concerts in this format but I had no equipment to play them). I didn't buy the 2910 (display unit) because I had no way of knowing how much use (or bad use) it has been given, so I didn't feel comfortable. I'll hook it up tomorrow. Thanks again for your advice and comments.
