Denon DVD-5910 Universal Player Features Comparison

It outlines the differences in Denon's upcoming DVD-5910 Universal DVD player in comparison to their current flagship model, the DVD-5900. There are some pleasant suprises such as the inclusion of the Realta - HQV decoding engine which handles interlaced and progressive output on the player, and DVDO-HD for scaling to HDMI and DVI simultaneously. We'll be reviewing this unit sometime after CES and will be sure to put it through its paces to get you a comprehensive look at the new feature set.

WOW...a forty pound DVD player  Sounds impressive. I sure hope Denon takes a little more time to double check the functions so that they don't end up with problems that came up early in the 5900 product. Any idea of MSRP on this puppy?

Here we go again! Another new player from Denon with the proprietary "Denon Link" that STILL doesn't work with SACD. I suspect that this is going to be the case until the death of SACD.

I guess Sony is on their little "Power Trip" and will never authorize SACD over Denon's "Denon Link".

I'm so sick of hearing about "Denon Link" and how it's capable of playing DVD Audio and SACD through it's proprietary link. Always with a little * next to SACD indicating that SACD hasn't been approved yet but is expected to be approved by the time the new product ships. But it never is.

Just some honest questions. Please help me with my ignorance.
Why would you buy a DVD player like this?
What type of person (other then rich) would be looking at this model?

I've read the impressive specs. But is the cost justified? I've seen and heard many CD and DVDs with blips, bumps, snaps, and pops. Are you not just buying a really expensive needle to play the newest album? Is the DVD disk technology and quality I buy at Walmart getting that good to justify this Holy Grail?

I'm missing something.

I agree with FARESCAPER. How anyone can justify a DVD player that expensif :( Do anyone can see and hear a difference in the video and sound with there own ear an eye or you need few test lab to say that baby play better that any under $500 range DVD like there own DVD 1910 !

Whether the price difference is worth it is up to the consumer, but I will snap some pictures to attempt to demonstrate the differences in player quality when I publish the review of the DVD-3910. I'll do it as a sidebar to show the picture quality that a better player affords (though I won't have the 5910 on hand.) There is most defintely a very visible difference between Wal-Mart and high-end.

Audio is also a consideration of course, as discrete handling of SACD and DVD-Audio/Video amounts to two high-end players in one.

The MSRP is supposedly $3500 - and yes that's a LOT of money. The DVD-3910 by comparison is $1299.

And why not a Denon 3910 SDI modded paired with an IScan HD for less money? :D

And with the little added "bonus" of processing and scaling ALL your sources...

I don't understand why it needs the Realta HQV processing and DVDO-HD scaling. I thought the Realta HQV processing was the best thing since sliced bread and did everything you could possibly want. Sounds like it just being used as an MPEG2 decoding chip.

It is getting a little ridiculous isn't, I mean, come on Denon, stop it already, Sony isn't even allowing SACD over HDMI, give that little asterisk about Denon Link/SACD a rest, the poor thing is probably pretty tired by now. Or at least tell the copy-and-paste people... :D

There are huge differences with these high end units, in fact I was going to ask on here if anyone has an opnion between this new Denon unit, and the Esoteric either the dv-50, or the UX-1. If you think it worth the difference in price. The Denon retails for $3500, the dv-50 $6000, and the UX-1 $12,500. I know that this denon has spent a lot of money on the Video, but how is the Audio. I own the 5900, and I am not that happy with it. this new 5910 wieghs twice as much, so it may have a more solid sound. The Esoteric transport is rock solid. Let me know if anyone has any opinions on this.

A solid transport is certainly an important attribute of a CD/DVD player. However, weight alone doesn't necessarily guarantee a great one. When I get my DVD-5910 for review I will go over all of this as I intend to do a very thorough review of this product and not just focus on video nitpicks :) I am an audio guy at heart so you can rest assured I will be reporting on its audio performance and I have a DVD-5900 as my reference already. Stay tuned...

5910 review?

I'm not in the market for one, but curious - it's 17 months since the post anticipating the 5910 review, has the review been posted?

I don't see it.

drumhobo, here is an excerpt from Secrets review comparing the 5910 to the UX-1
The 5910 uses the newest Burr Brown digital to analog converters, the PCM-1792. This DAC will handle both PCM and DSD in their native format and offers 132 dB of dynamic range with 0.0004% THD. For comparison, I used the $13,000 Teac UX-1 Universal Player that relies on the older Burr Brown PCM-1704. Using selections from the Blue Man Group Audio DVD-A, I found the Denon to have a tighter bottom end and more apparent dynamic range. This was especially apparent with "PVC IV". I did think the noise floor was slightly improved though in the stereo realm with the UX-1, probably due to its dual differential stereo design and balanced outputs. The 5910 does use a discrete 1792 DAC in a differential configuration for stereo, but it is not balanced. That is one of the only audio features I thought Denon should look at for future flagship products. The inclusion of a balanced two-channel output would be outstanding, especially given the quality level of DACs employed.
cheers:)
