Denon DVD-3910 cannot play most DVDs

I've had my 3910 for about 5 years. It's connected to my 5805 via analog 5.1, HDMI, RGB, digital and DenonLink.

As of about a year ago it became very finicky about playing DVDs. It won't play most, even some brand new ones and other pristine discs. Recently I was able to get it to play a ripped and freshly burnt DVD but tonight I'm trying to watch Quantum of Solace on what looks to be a pristine DVD from Movie Galley and it will not recognize it. Display comes up 0h00m00s.

The machine has been playing CDs for me all day long no problem.

TIA,

Tim

Welcome to the forum, Tim!

Perhaps the lens for the DVD laser has something on it (e.g. dust or hair). Have you tried cleaning off the lens assembly? Perhaps just opening up the disc try and blowing into it (by mouth or using compressed air or a hair dryer) will help with your issue.

No help there. Could it be that the mechanism is well protected inside and compressed air might not reach it? I guess I'll have to take the top off.

Taking the top off would almost certainly give better access to the lens assembly. It will also most likely void the warranty - just a note in case it's still under warranty. Another option is a lens-cleaning disc like this one, but I have no personal experience with those.

There are others here who have more experience with getting dust off of lens than me, and they might chime in here.

If cleaning the lens doesn't do it, you may have a bad tracking laser. Might not be worth fixing at this point in time. I have a 3910 that's still doing fine, but if it required a major fix I'd just replace it with an Oppo.

There are two separate assemblys. One for redbook CD & one for everything else. It sounds like the everything else one is done for.

I have a Denon 3910 myself with the same problem. plays most discs but has trouble with few. the ones it does have trouble with played fine in the past.
I have cleaned the laser lens with disc cleaners, taken the cover off and cleaned inside. finally took mine into the shop to be fixed.
I have done some looking online and have found a number of people seem to have this trouble "AFTER FOUR YEARS"
btw mine was 4 years old in dec.

Interesting to see so many with issues on their 3910s...mine works without any issues...granted I hardly use now due to Blu...hopefully it will continue without issue with little use...

I have no isses with mine neither and I use it a lot, mostly for CDs and music DVDs. It plays anything, all regions, and is a quiet machine. One small negative is its poor upscaling capability, even my $56.99 (or US$48) does a better job. Not that it matters for me but it does make it not "universal" enough. My only regret is that I paid too much and couldn't help thinking how much (>> $1,000 for sure) money I could have saved buying the Oppo instead.
