Denon DVD-2910 and Hi-Res Audio confusion

I'm confused about the differences in playback formats between DVD-Audio, SACD, and DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1.
My DVD is connected via multi-channel analog cables as well as digital coax to my receiver. The receiver's input is set to analog in. For example, in playing Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", which is a DVD-A as well as DTS/DD 5.1, the menu only lets me choose DTS or DD 5.1 playback. When I start playback, the 2910s display indicates either DTS or DD, but not DVD-Audio (same with a SACD).
I'm obviously misunderstanding the situation here, but isn"t DVD-A & SACD at a higher resolution than DTS or DD? Is there something I'm configuring wrong?

Your wording says your receiver's input is set to analog in...........
Maybe it's the same thing, but Denon's setting would be "EXT. IN", where other's would be "Multi-Channel".
Also, in your dvd player's setup, there is a menu option somewhere, that seems like it should be set to video, but actually should be set to audio. I forget exactly the one it is. It's probably in the setup, if "EXT. IN" doesn't do it for you.
Good luck!

To make the DVD-A tracks available, you must set the player to Audio priority in the player's hires setup menu (not sure what that particular menu is called though). The DD/DTS tracks are on the standard DVD-V content, which is available to be compatible with any DVD player, and with your player set to Video priority, that is what you are getting.

That's it! After setting up the 2910s "ETC" menu for "Audio" (it was set at "Video") I started getting the 96 khz/24 bit DVD-Audio. Man, the manual sure doesn't make that very clear.
Thanks for that tip, JGarcia. (I used to listen to the other (dead) JGarcia all the time.

I'm very happy with the sound quality, but frankly, the DTS 5.1 was also very good. Haven't had a chance to do any A/B listening yet, but Tubular Bells and Steely Dan's Gaucho in DVD-A are absolutely stunning.

Yeh, awesome re-make. Also try Dire Straits (Brothers In Arms), Nick Drake (A Treasury), Jeff Wayne (War of The Worlds), Elton John (Peachtree Road)

Just want to add my recommedation: Peter Gabriel's Up. The redbook CD was stellar, and even sounded three-dimensional at times, but the multichannel SACD takes it to a whole new level. Exciting, inspiring music -- highly recommended.

2910 & Bass

I just got a Denon 2910. Hooked it up via 5.1 and got it working fine. However, I can't seem to get enough bass out from my sub. I tried running through the set up several times. Did I miss something. I'v looked through the manual, but not sure what I'm looking for? I'm a little confused about the setup...

I had the weirdest experience with something similar to this. When it came to using the digital audio connection, my bass output was just fine. When using the analog audio connection, my bass output was reduced quite a bit. So now every time I use the analog inputs, I have to increase the level of the sub. I don't understand why this happens. Maybe I have something improperly set, I dunno, but I have to do this every time. This could be your problem too.

cheers,

Wow!

All I can say is why did I wait so long to get me one of these things!!! I adjusted my Yamaha 2500 per your suggestion, cranked up Dark Side of the Moon! Yessss. Incredible sounding. Now I plan to listen to my other DVD-A's as well. If you have not gone into the hi-res dvd market, take the plunge.

Just got the DSOTM SACD - gotta agree with those of you gushing on about this recording. To date myself, I was an adult (well, a hippie adult) when this thing was first released in the 70's, and it was pretty revolutionary, even in those days. The audio system I had then was pretty impressive for its day, but this hi-res version is certainly an eye-opener on my new system. Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is another killer, IMHO.

hey aspaceintime:

have you set the speakers to small on the DVD player?? made a 100% difference for bass when i found this. Also, bass enhancer to "yes" and turn the sub to +5 or so on the speaker volume levels. hope that helps..

I was also an adult hippie, back in the 60s & 70s. I agree about the album being revolutionary, when released. I think this is one of the best albums that's ever been recorded! I wish we'd had this technology, back then! :D

Okay, I'm confused. I have a Denon 2910 hooked to my TV with an HDMI cable and hooked to my AV receiver with a single optical cable. The 2910 is set to 2 channel audio and bistream format. Will I be able to play SACD's and have them sound properly? Most of the people here seem to be talking about using multiple analog cables. I would think the single optical cable would be better?

No. Try this...In order to hear SACD, you need to run the 5 analog cables out from your DVD to your multi-channel inputs on your receiver. Then you must hit the multi-channel input button on your receiver to hear the SACD/DVD-A. Hope this helps...
