Denon DVD 1930CI Picture Quality Bad or just me?

I just got a Denon 1930CI to hold me over till I get the 2930CI. After setting it up with my Denon AVR-2807 Receiver with HDMI, I played a DVD and was shocked to see that it was worse than my Xbox 360. I played with every setting and every combination from the color space on dvd/receiver, enhanced mode on dvd/receiver, convert mode on/off on dvd/receiver. The yellow HDMI light was on the whole time and when I clicked the HDMI button, I would set it to 1080p.

I am perplexed. This is my first upconverting DVD player and I am starting to wonder if the 2930CI is even worth it?!

Lets get more specific here...What are you displeased with in the picture quality? Grainy? Pixelated? Also what display are you hooking up to?

details

The picture quality is grainy and not nearly as crisp. Also, when in RGB mode, the black bars on the bottom and top of the screen show some pixelization on the edge where the bar meets the picture. It is still black but much pixelization.

Bottom line, the picture quality is not nearly as good as my xbox 360.

The receiver is Denon AVR-2807 and the TV is the new Samsung 61" DLP 1080P set. The Xbox 360 is run through the receiver as well via component video. The dvd is through the receiver via HDMI. The receive is outputting via HDMI to the tv.

HELP!!

thanks in advance.

Just for fun try running the DVD player directly to the TV via HDMI. Also try running it direct to the TV using component and see if you get any better results.

What is your TV's native resolution? Make sure the DVD player's signal is at the same resolution to disengage the TV's internal scalers...

I went to the retailer and tried a different 1930CI with the same result. I tried it on many 1080p sets and even confirmed on the tv that the signal it was receiveing was a 1080p signal, however, the picture quality was no better than an xbox360. There are distorted black color where the edge of the picture meets the bars on the top and bottom.

Hopefully, when my retailer gets in the 2930ci, it will be much better, as it seems like the reviews for the player are pretty good.

any other comments/suggestions/recommendations are appreciated.

Interesting. My two year old Denon 1710 provides a great picture. Go figure. If it bothered me I could complain about the one second layer change, otherwise no problems.
