I agree here. However, my budget won't allow me to do so. With that said, the 988 may be all I can afford right now. I am also considering the Pioneer 1018 and the Yammie 1800.

Cheers,

Phil
Try taking an internet ad to a Best Buy Magnolia store and see what they will do for you. They'll add in the shipping costs (which is fair) but they should match the price. You should be able to get a good deal on any of those.

The lack of Audyssey on the Pioneer and the Yamaha would kill those off for me. I really like some the features Audyssey has to offer.

The 663 is tough to beat too. Your BD/HD DVD players already do upconversions so you probably don't need the video features of the more expensive receivers. The 3808 will get you two more HDMI inputs and an Ethernet port to facilitate firmware update, net audio etc. In terms of sound quality I doubt you will gain much. If you are serious about upgrade, why not wait till after Christmas when prices should take a dive. I just don't think the 1018 is much of an upgrade for your 663.

I didn't realize he already had a 663. I'd say any of these options would be an incremental upgrade at best. I would sit tight too.

I did this last week, and Circuit City would not match Best Buy's online price. They said the product had to be available at a local store, and not just online.

Sometimes people have better success if they call the store instead of showing up in person (I don't know which you did, John). The theory is that the store considers you much more willing to not buy from them if you just need to hang up and call someone else, as compared to leaving the store. It sure worked for me at Best Buy, and then I saw it as a story on (I think) 20/20.

Just something to try out if it comes up again for any of you.

BTW, welcome to the forum, John!

So, would you say the video conversion is a significant difference between the two? I am a bit confused here. I am not worried about Zone 3 and an extra remote, but video conversion could be an issue. Thanks for the info Dave.

Cheers,

Phil
For all I know, the video conversion on the two units may be identical. It may be an omission on the 988 specs page. Sometimes, Denon's site is less than clear on certain issues. This may be one of them.

The closest Magnolia is a very good drive away. As high as gas is, I would not save much. Right now, I think I will just keep my Yammie 663 and get some things (gear) :D:D payed off. I want to get a BR player as well, but am awaiting to see what Oppo comes out with first. Thanks for the info.

Oh man looking forward to it. Just when you have some time. No real rush my friend. I am sure there are others here that would like to see it as well.

Very interesting points. I agree that the 1018 would not be much of an upgrade. I may just wait a while before upgrading as I am happy with my 663 for now anyways.

Yeah, this seems to be the consensus. I will just wait a while before upgrading. Been looking forward to obtaining Audyssey. Thanks once again for your help.

This is more or less the same thing they tell me. I have even seen them call the competitor to see if they have it in stock. My local BB is the same way.

This can happen I suppose. Perhaps, I will give Denon a call and see what they say regarding this. However, it looks like I will be keeping my 663 for now until I am able to make a significant upgrade.

It may very well be. When I went to get my display, I told them where I saw it on line. They pulled the add up and matched it (this was last year). Also at BB when I bought my 1015 (three years back). May just depend on your region.

It must be croseiv. I tried to get them(BB) to price match before buying my 1015 and they laughed at me. No big deal though as I got one at a good price. Now jinjuku has it...........LOL!!!!!!! :p:p

price vs >>>>>

How one reciever sounds vs another is your choice. Purhcased a Denon 988 from CC online for 649.96. Local pick-up or del. When I went to pick-up went to wrong store. BB DAH Senior moment. Anyway, they offered me same price on a Yama 863 and a HK 354 which they had in stock and brought to the counter. Just to let anyone know.
