Denon avr2805 volume level

Hi - i've just set up my Denon AVR2805 and would like to hear other users experiences with volume levels

My amp is only wired up to 2 speakers at present, and i've been testing with movies played via my dvd player, with a coaxial digital connection, in virtual surround. I'm finding that I need to crank up the volume to -10dB to get a good volume level which is loud but not theatre volume. The room is small, about 8'*20' and the speakers are wharfedale 9.1's.

I guess I thought it would be louder at this level. Would also like to know how I can test the volume reference level (whether I can do this using the supplied microphone or if I need to get a sound meter). According to the Denon website I think the reference level is 65 dB when set to -10dB.

The test tones in the speaker config menu don't appear to alter in volume when adjusting the volume knob so not sure what dB level these tones should be at.

Any info anyone has would be great!

If the volume knob has no affect on the volume of the test tones, then that receiver is the type that automatically sets the volume to a pre-determined setting - usually 0 dB.

You must then use the channel trims to adjust each channel to be roughly equal and at whatever level you want. The standard would be to follow Dolby Reference Level and adjust the trims so that an SPL meter reads 75 dB. If your manual says 65 dB at -10 volume setting, that would be the same thing (it would be 75 dB at 0 volume setting).

You can do it by ear until they all sound roughly equal, but using an SPL meter and calibrating to a specific level is preferred.
