denon AVR2803 for Music only/ What's wrong?

OK, I just pulled this AV unit out of the closet. I used it years ago for a 7.1 AV system. Now I want to us it for music only.
I figure I could just hook up speakers and go, but that's not working. I don't have it hooked to a TV for the on screen programming so I'm not sure what the audio inputs and outputs are set too. is this why I can't seem to get any sound out of it? if i hook my Ipod into the CD RCA jack and play it, I can hear some music but it very muffled and distorted, something isn't right? When I turn it to AM or FM I don't get any sound. Yes the speakers are hooked up right ( hooked to the L/R front speaker connections). Any Ideas how or what i need to do to get this setup so i can use it for music only. or is this even possible?

Figured it out

It took me a little while but I figure it out. I hooked the receiver up to a tv so I could use the on screen programming. I reset all the Digital in Assignments to Off allowing me to use the RCA jacks. i hooked up my Ipod and it now it works fine.
