got very nice cd player, onkyo dx-c390, only uses optic cable for hookup. cannot get sound!...where on receiver do i tell it i want to listen to my cd player?

Is this a new-to-you Denon? Did you run a reset before using? I'd think it would be automatic to use the input connection you're using, but you can check input assignment starting on p.177 of the pdf manual....
