Denon AVR 687

Hello,
I just purchased a Denon AVR 687. My plan was to use my old speakers from a DVD surround system that I purchased about 5 years ago. Unfortunately, my Sub-woofer is not compatible with the receiver, and the sound coming from my speakers is mediocre.

I would like to purchase a nice set of surround speakers to compliment my reciever. Any suggestions?

Since you have the speakers, you may want to invest in a powered sub first. Sounds like your current sub may be a passive unit. How much would you be willing to spend and what size is your space if you'd like sub recos?

I don't want to spend more than $500 for the sub. My space is pretty small.

Since your area is relatively small, I’d suggest an HSU STF-2. $349 + $30. http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html

You can then plan the upgrade for the front 3 speakers, preferably at the same time so that the 3 are timbre matched.
