Denon AVR-685S or AVR-1705? Also, HDTV ?

Hi All,

New to the forums and looking to upgrade my reciever. I've looked at these two Denon models because of the price and video upconversion.

For the life of me, I can't see any difference between the two apart from color! Denon has them listed as part of seperate lines, the 685 as "specialty audio" and the 1705 as "A/V reciever". Does anyone know if there are any differences I should be aware of? They even sell for the same price $399.

If anyone has other reciever recommendations in the same price range, I'd appreciate that as well.

Also, an ignorant question, but am I assuming correctly that 100Mhz component inputs on the reciever will switch a HDTV signal and a progressive scan DVD signal with no quality loss? I have a Sony HS10 TV with a 1080i input, which I currently use for the progressive scan DVD player but plan to add a HDTV box soon.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

John

Yes that is correct. I have the 3805 and switch HD @ 1080i and DVD @ 480P through the receiver with no loss in picture quality. I'm not familiar with the two receivers so maybe someone else can answer those questions for you.

John,

From what I've read, they are the same units. One sells from direct retailers-1705, the other sells at large chains-685. Similar to Yamaha's two offerings. Some of those units were known to overheat. My 3805 has been fine, but runs warm on a 7.1 setup with inneficient speakers. What speakers are you running?

Thanks for the responses!

I'm using older Infinity bookshelf speakers (RS2/CC2) - nothing high end at all, that's why I was looking for an inexpensive reciever that will handle the video I need. It seems that Denon is the only company that makes a unit with 3 component inputs and upconverts in that price range.

Should I be worrying about the overheating? It will be in a small room and I am in no way gonna push this thing.

Also, if anyone can recommend a better alternative, please let me know. I will spend more $$$ if it is worthwhile, again though, this is for a modest home theater in a small room.

Thanks so much for the help!

Don't worry about overheating. You'll be fine running your speakers with the Denon. For the options they offer, it's probably the best bang for your buck.

Thanks again for the advice.

I have one more question. I was reading today about lip sync being as much as 4 frames off when using an HDTV signal through a reciever. Is this big enough of a problem to spend the $ on a reciever that allows you to delay the audio? I noticed the high-end Denon (5308, I think) does this, but will cost me like $600 more than I was going to spend. When I upgrade to HDTV i don;t want this to be an issue. Should I be concerned?
