Denon AVR-589 Auto Setup

I'm helping a friend do auto setup of an AVR-589 with Boston Speakers (The Denon DHT-589BC HT in a box).

The auto set up reported a phase problem on two of the speakers. One appeared OK the other not, but I reversed them both. Then I re-ran the setup and found a different speaker with a phase problem. I fixed that at others started failing.

Any ideas what is going on? The room is rather lively, so maybe the echos cause this?

It can be a room problem, it also can be that the speakers are wire out of phase internally.

Try toe in on the speakers to avoid close wall reflections, also try to separate your microphone from the back wall at least 12 inches to make sure you are not getting back wall reflections.

Thanks! I did move the microphone to a better spot and with a few trials got the phasing OK.
I was a bit confused for a bit when all 5 speakers (front l/r, center and surround l/r) were all out of phase! Wonder what the reference is?

Anyway, my friend is happy now and it sounds OK, considering his really bad acoustics, I guess his (or, actually his wife's) priority is in the room decoration, not the sound. Too bad.
