Denon AVR-588 setup help

I have a Denon AVR-588 setup in our media room. Currently I have :

BlueRay player setup on HDMI & optical input
HD dvr setup on HDMI & coaxial input

I want to add a regular DVD player to the setup. For audio I used the optical input and this works ok.
For picture I want to use component input (dvd player does not have hdmi and amp only has two hdmi inputs anyway). However I cannot get picture to show. I have tried connecting the component cables to each of the 3 different component inputs and no luck.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Hi Nick, and welcome to Audioholics,

In the video menu of your Denon receiver, you have to assign the component video input to the source (DVD player) with the adjoining input.
Check in your manual in the ditto section, it will guide you through.

Hope this helps,
Bob

i looked through the manual and still cannot get it to work. I cannot find the video menu. I found the input section and have assigned the 2 hdmi inputs ok however cannot find a 3rd assignable input option.

I think this model does not convert the component video signal for HDMI output so you may have to connect your TV component video in to the component video out of the receiver and then make select the appropriate In/Out of the TV and the receiver.

That is what I was hoping was not the case as we are using a HD projector and that would mean running another cable behind the wall and across the attic and into the back of the projector which is something I don't want to do :(

A HDMI switcher is not cheap, but it is an option.

You can now get an HDMI switcher for about $50 or so, check for a sale.

* Or run some component video cables to your projector.

Why not just use the BD player for the DVDs?
Now! That is the smartest answer of the day,... so far. :)

* I guess the OP would also like to plug his DVD player to his system;
but why? Is what the blu-ray player suppose to do (replace your DVD player and simplify your system?).

** But, what if his DVD player also happened to play SACD & DVD Audio discs? And that it can do so from the HDMI out? Mmmm...

*** HDMI Switcher anyone? Or Oppo BDP-83 blu-ray player?
