Denon AVR-5805 MkII Receiver Upgrade

Jeff Talmadge, Marketing Manager for Denon USA, gave us the skinny on the new AVR-5805 MkII ("mark two") and what exactly users get for the additional $1000 upgrade or revised model. From what we can see, this is a pretty hefty 1080p "mod" that also integrates some additional connections and Denon's new and impressive PC audio streaming functionality. This flagship just got a lot bigger... We post a side-by-side chart that shows the exact configurations for both models, making it easy to compare.

Thanks for the update Clint!

Could you please let us know when you plan on doing an updated (Take 2?) review of the 5805MK2? I would be nice to get your feel of the upconverting quality as well as some of the fixes to known issues in the piece, (most noteably the Audessy EQ issues and OSD for HDMI)? I have been kicking around upgrading my 2 Kenwood Entre systems, (Yes... I have 6 5900 DVD changers; sooo... I like movies! :D ), and I read where this piece will now support direct streaming of Escient's music files to the MK2, (how cool!). If that's the case and it works well, I think a lot of people may not gripe as much about the lack of iPod support (which I don't get however and feel they missed the boat on this one!), with access to a 500GB music system.

Anyhow... your input on this piece is MOST appreciated, (I just ordered one to replace my LexMC1/Parasound1206/AudioControlBijouEQ theater set-up and hope I'm making the right choice)!!

Thanks
Kevin

Clint, any word on the upgrade for the 4806 to 4806CI. Also if you could ask Jeff, now that the HDMI 1.3 spec has be finalized any info wether Denon will offer an upgrade down the road to update the 4806/5805 HDMI inputs to 1.3?

I'll check into some of those issues. The HDMI 1.3 isn't likely to show up as an upgrade anywhere - at least not in full spec. We'll likely run some additional video tests on the 5805 MK2, but not anytime soon as we have a lot on our plate right now.

Bummer but I do realize you must have a lot going on these days. Would be very interesting to hear your thoughts whenever possible.

I heard that although the 1.3 specs have been approved and distributed, most of the manufacturers will not incorporate it until year end (as most already have their upgrade plans, with parts, eprom coding etc.. mapped out for the year and to change now would be costly)

Thanks for the quick reply Clint and keep up the GREAT work! ;o)

Anyone want to spend $7K for a receiver that doesn't support HDMI 1.3 and doesn't process Dolby True HD and DTS HD?

Anyone wanna spend even more on an esoteric processor that doesn't even support HDMI

No, but the next generation of receivers probably will. My point is: Don't spend major money now when big changes are coming.

Don't think so. I already have an AVR-5803 that will be obsolesced into a door-stop when hardware with HDMI 1.3 emerges in the next few months.

Interesting how some are obsessed with HDMI 1.3 when they can get it all with the current versions (HDMI 1.1/1.2) :)

I have a 5803 also, and will not consider it obsolesced even when (if) they come out with HDMI 1.5.

Whenever that happens, let me know. I'd be happy to take that doorstop off your hands. I've got a shelf by my TV in the bedroom that needs to be held down by something heavy... :D

HDMI 1.3 will have twice the bandwidth and other advantages. See http://www.avrev.com/news/0706/06hdmi13.shtml.
I borrowed this from another forum, hope the OP doesn't mind.

"Current HDMI 1.1 can handle 8 channels of 192/24 PCM digital audio. That's more than enough to deliver full resolution of any of the HD audio codecs."

"The only thing that HDMI 1.3 allows that HDMI 1.1 doesn't is transmitting of HD audio codecs in their native bitstream (i.e., not converted to hi-rez PCM in the player). But that's completely useless until decoders for those codecs are built into receivers and pre-pros. So there is no advantage (sonically or otherwise) to HDMI 1.3 compared to the current HDMI 1.1 version being used."

btw goodman your link didn't work............

Isn't the current upgrade for the 5805 and 4806 replacing the current HDMI board with the newer one? So why couldn't they upgrade both units to 1.3 if all it takes is replacing the board and then reprogramming the 3 TI Aureus processors. I'm pretty sure both units have the processing power??
