Denon AVR-5803 and 1080p Display Issues

This is my first post on this forum although I have been a registered for a long time. I have a Denon AVR-5803 connected to a Pioneer 50" Plasma display with component video cables. Both are about 6 years old.

I just bought a Playstation 3 after considerable research - I decided it was a better value than a dedicated Blu-Ray player especially with a $150 rebate promotion for opening a credit card account.

I have no problems with a 1080i signal, but when I tried to send a 1080p signal the receiver spazzed out and started making a rapid clicking sound, like a switch or relay executing quickly.

I thought the AVR-5803 supported 1080p signals - maybe I'm wrong. Or maybe I have to change the setup somehow.

I have ordered an HDFury2 so I can use the HDMI output on the PS3 for upconverting DVDs, but that hasn't come yet so I am using a component connection for now.

Any thoughts on how to get 1080p to work, if possible, would be appreciated. The other thought I had is whether there is a problem with my unit that I never knew about since this is the first time I ever tried to send a 1080p signal through it.

Thanks.

I'm not sure but I don't think you can pass 1080p thru component cables.

hi risky - thanks for the reply.

After I posted this I began to think that it has to do with HDCP (Copy protection). So I think what is happening is that although a 1080p signal can pass through a component cable, any device such as the PS3 won't output the signal correctly unless connected to an HDCP device. So I'm hoping that the HDFury2 works as advertised which supposedly will allow you to send a protected 1080p signal over a component cable.

From the PS3 manual:

--If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.
-- Copyright-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard.

Hope this helps someone else figure this all out!!

I think you mean Denon AVR-5308CI?

I don't have any issues whatsoever on 1080p signals via HDMI my 5308CI.

No - AVR 5803 about 6 years old. (Does not have HDMI input.) Decided to make what I have work rather than buy new since everything is in good shape. FYI I am blown away by the capabilities of the PS3 and it ought to be considered by anyone looking to get a Blu-Ray player. It does so much more than just play Blu-Rays, including on line rental of HD content. Has built in wireless internet.
