I just bought my first home theater. I have a 55" sony grand wega, denon 755 dvd, and denon avr485. When playing a dvd or even just watching tv and with the avr set at pro-logic the background music is louder than the spoken word?
Can anyone advise me on this...also am using infinity speakers front rear, center
and sub
thanks rdetl

Sounds like you need to go into the receiver's setup menus, and adjust the volume of each speaker, in the "Levels" area. The ideal way to do this is while using an SPL (Sound Pressure Level) meter and an HT Setup disc (Avia, S&V Tune Up, or DVE/Digital Video Essentials). You can get the SPL meter at Radio Shack and the S&V disc at Best Buy. Amazon.com has the DVE or Avia disc.

Without the SPL meter, you'll just have to do it by ear. Adjust the center channel a little higher than the others, and the background music and noises won't overpower the voices. You can also set the speaker distances too. Set the distance of each speaker, from the "sweet spot" (place you'll be sitting while watching movies or listening to music).

Good luck! Keep us posted on how it works out, and how you like your equipment.
Denon makes good stuff, but have a language of their own. Their remotes aren't the easiest to learn either.......... :)

avr 485 setup

Ok I have done some reading prior to getting the disk and meter. In the reciever setup it has a setting for large or small speakers? I assume that because my satellites and center are of the bookshelf type I should set them to small
the sats are 9.5Hx6Wx7D and the center is 5.5Hx14.25Wx7D and called infinity primus theater pack, freq response for all is 100hz-20,000hz. the sub is infinity PS-8, freq Resp is 35hz-150hz and they recommend 80 hz...seems like it should be set higher or closer to 100-120? Phase switch 0 or main?
Our room is 14Wx20Deep with tv and front, center, and sub with rear about 18 ft from the TV ...our listening area is about 10ft from the tv and 7 ft from rear spkrs.
Thanks for your commennts JVC
I'll watch for any additional comments you would care to make.
This may be difficult for me because I am 80% deaf and will rely on Wife & Daughter to make the calls for more or less

If you set the speakers to "Small", the LFE (bass) signal will go to the subwoofer. If you set speakers to "Large", the LFE will be distributed to your speakers. Some people that have good woofers in their speakers, set them to large, and don't even get a subwoofer right away. I, personally, prefer a subwoofer.

80 hz setting for the sub, is pretty standard. You can try other settings, and see which sounds best to everyone. If you have the paperwork for the sub, it should tell you where to set it. Not sure about the phase switch. Again, see which sounds best.....

Good luck! Keep us posted? :)

Set your speakers to small. Set the sub cutoff at 100hz or even 120hz. 80hz is not enough for those speakers. Phase should be left at zero if the sub is near the front speakers. If the sub is at the rear of the room, it should be turned all the way up.
