Denon avr-3805 versus Yamaha rx-z1

Newbie reporting for duty for the first time. After careful in-depth research I narrowed my choices. Here is the scoop. I have the opportunity to purchase a RX-Z1 from an authorized dealer with the 5 year warranty. It comes with nothing else, nada not even a power cord. The price is for 995.00 out the door. It was a return. The other choice would be to purchase the avr 3805 from ebay for 959.00. I can’t afford MSRP. Any advice?

Normally, I would say go with the Yamaha. But not when it comes with nada else ... not even an owner's manual.

And I would also recommend avoiding ebay transactions unless you are dealing with an experience and reputable seller.

You don't say where you live, but if you live in CA, try Pacific Sales. I picked up a brand new, boxed, 3805 for $850 plus tax. Including a power cord. Sure, I negotiated hard, but it was worth it.

Good luck

The Yamaha would be sweet for that price. The manual can be found online at Yamaha's site or another member can possibly get it for you.

As for the Denon you may want to check out Dakmart and get a refurbished unit with a one year warranty for less than $900 delivered. I've purchased many refurbished electronic components over the years including my 3805 with no problems.

Good luck.

I can pick up the Z1 remote on ebay for 159.00. The manual I can download from the Yamaha site. At the end of the day is the Denon 3805 a better deal at 900 plus dollars? The elink capability is a cooll wistle. But can't afford a elink dvd for the moment. Is this massive Z1 a better chioce. Here is another angle. Ok, guys lets get a count. fs someone would donate one of these brand new receivers which one would you choose?

The Z1 - PERIOD

The original RAV style remote can be had on eBay, often brand new, as you already know for a good price. Power cords are easy and the manual most definitely is on their website for anyone to download.

I have had my Z1 for about 2 years now - I got it the month it was released. It has never, ever, EVER had a single issue. All channels work very well and the 3 component inputs are enough to handle HD cable, DVD, and a gaming console. Sound is loud and clean... I don't think I've ever pushed it anywhere near the 0db mark... it almost scares me how loud it would be.

The ONE downside: It is 6.1, not 7.1. Meh.

WITH a 5 year warranty for under a grand is really one hell of a deal and you should snatch it up immediately. Keep in mind that almost any online purchase of good receivers voids the manufacturers warranty.

Denon is great, but that Yamaha is a steal.

Yammie

I freakin' own a 3805, and still I'd take the Yammie at that price. (Assuming, of course, that I can get all the accoutrements listed by the other posters.)

The 3805 is a nice piece of equipment -- it meets all of my needs. But in my view, the D-LINK is overrated. Unless you listen to a lot of DVD-Audio discs, you basically hardly ever use it.

Good luck!

I've got an extra (heavy duty) power cord I'll give you for the Yamaha if you pay the shipping. :)

Ok guys this story is getting better. I’ve been salivating for 3 month dreaming about this yamie. I work for Direct TV as an installer. About two month ago I went to this mansion to do a High def TVO. To my surprise this guy had a movie theater style room in his house. Guess what receiver was powering all his audio thru his house. Yes, a massive Z1 with a Nile amp hanging by the Z1’s ribs. I told him about my desire to pawn the wife and dogs for the Z1. I also told him that I wash trying to get one from the local dealer on its way down in price after the Z9 came out. They had a few thruout Florida without the remote. For some reason the remotes disappear from the face of the earth. Hum, I wonder why? He said that he was buddy to the local dealer store manager. To my amazement he said that he had an extra remote that he paid 400.00 for. I almost had a climax. He wanted me to do some custom work in his house and promised to throw in the remote. He was going to talk with the store manager to see if he could get me a Z1. I never heard from him. Here comes the kicker. I contacted him today to finish his custom work. He said that the store didn’t have a Z1 at the time. I told him that I just bought a nake Z1. I finish his custom work and guess what he gave me. Two Buds, the infamous Z1 remote and the original manual. Almost fainted right in this guys living room. Now I have this massive rock in my family room. All I do is look at it. I pinch myself and scrub my eyes. What the hell do I do now. I’m afraid to turn it on. For the moment, I have no speakers worth mentioning. Well 2 Polk RTI4 with some tower speakers unknown to the high end world. I have a little center channel that won’t stop trembling since I parked the giant next to him. I’m going to steal my pc power cable and see this thing come a live one of these days. It will take a week to learn the remote.

PS: He is going to check with the local store mgr. on a price for the Denon 3805. He just got a big 15,000 dollar Pioneer Elite plasma for 6000 bucks. I wonder what he can getthe Denon for. I might sale the Z1 without even power it on.

Turn it on and enjoy while you have it with whatever you have.

Since I am in an apartment right now, I use my Z1 with HTIB Kenwood speakers that don't even compare to my Def-Tech speakers in storage.

You know what? I still appreciate the excellent sound that the receiver supplies and the ease of use.

I connected the front speakers last night. That was all she wrote. My wife freaked out because I started to play at 10:00 last night. She sent me to bed. HE ,HE. Now I need a DVD. The most expensive at Circuit City was Sony at 116.00 dollar. I can't belief DVD players are cheap now a days. Should I buy a DVD recorder instead. I just can’t justify a 3 or 400.00 dollars for a simple DVD. Is their a big difference. Let’s not talk about expensive cable.

There is a lot of discussion on this in other forums now. I don't recommend you spend to much on a DVD player or on DVDs as HD discs, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, will be out at the end of this year and prices will likely bomb drop very quickly. Next Summer maybe $500.00 for a recordable Blu-Ray Disc or HD-DVD unit... Save your cash now and just get a sub $200.00 play back unit that is nice.

I actually have a Sony player that has worked very well for me for over 2 years.

And then when your ready to buy that,it will be something else and you can wait on that and so on and so on. So goes electronics and our money.

The person that has a friend at the local dealer can get me the avr-3805 for 950.00. I was thinking about selling the Z1 for around 1500.00 and make some money for a set of speakers. But, I wanted a Z1 for so long that it will be almost impossible to uproot this monster from my rack. Especially, after I heard my first DVD. POWER RULES. bwad bwoy. I bought a Sony DVD with a 6 disk cd carousel for about 116.00. Waiting for the HD DVD version. I also picked up a Polk csi3 center channel speaker. Thanks BMXTRIX
I never got concrete answers on the 3805 versus the Z1.

My wish list:
Polk
RTI12 Fronts
FXI5 Rear
Own RTI4 Presence
