Denon AVR-3805 surround mode issue/question

Hello Audioholics - I have spent hours trying to figure out what button combo my husband pressed that screwed up the DSP simulation mode of Wide Screen surround. Sound is coming from Front speakers instead of Center.

I know I could use auto setup with mic, regress to default settings, but my OCD is kicking in, I want to know how to undo this, in case it happens again.

He was trying to change to 5 channel mode or superstadium for watching a game. Blindly pressing buttons until he heard the correct sound.

Now we cannot watch TV or movies with good sound coming from center. Center works fine, it works in 5 channel/stereo mode, and in test mode.

I cannot remember if this is normal on display of receiver, but Multi is lit up. I have zone 2 and 3 powered off now. No change.

If anyone has a possible solution, please share!

I think the first thing I'd try is putting the surround mode back in "Auto".
Put the system in TV mode, select "Surround", then select "Auto".
If your movies from the bluray or dvd player are also messed up, put your system in Movie mode and follow the same steps.

Then check page 80 for a description about forcing modes different than the native signal. Note the caution at the bottom:

Personal Memory Plus
This set is equipped with a personal memorize function that automatically memorizes the surround modes and input modes selected for the
input different sources. When the input source is switched, the modes set for that source last time it was used are automatically recalled.
The surround parameters, tone control settings and playback level balance for the different output channels are memorized for each
surround mode.

It means any time you're watching TV, (or other input), and manually change the surround mode, your AVR will remember how you changed it, and will make the new setting you default every time you select that input. So if your husband is watching a ballgame and changes the surround mode, that mode will become the default every time you watch TV. Simply change it back.

Thank you for the information. You are correct. But the problem is we have always changed to another source and surround modes. I do it all the time, when listening to Cd's, or Pandora, or switching to the stadium sound for his football games. But this time... I turned on movie, notice it is on stadium, no biggie, turn it to wide screen mode to watch a movie and center is off, only two front speakers. On display it shows FR, FL, C, SW, SR, SL. I checked settings of that mode, all the speaker settings are exactly what they were prior. I turned up the Center volume settings just to see if it made a difference, nothing.

For example, Mono Movie mode works fine, sounds like Mono, yuck, but it works like it is programmed, the voices on a movie or show comes through center. Stadium, sounds like the stadium, all speakers at once, echo type like intended.

Stereo is FR and FL, Sub.

Widescreen is wrong. It is not in a surround type mode so to speak. It plays like it is in stereo mode.

Look for a button labeled 'Mode' and press it once- you'll see that it changes to another mode. Press it repeatedly until it changes to DTS (or whatever you prefer).

Make sure the AVR is set up correctly for the number and type of speakers you have.

Got it, thank you. Closer to a solution possibly... I had pressed Mode, Analog, and Ext. In button repeatedly the past several days, the display showed Ext In, Analog, Analog Only after button press of each. I could not get anything else yesterday morning out of Mode button except for the Analog or Analog only.. can't remember which.. But now it changes to Auto, like it should, manual stated that as well - hence no hair left. DTS, PCM, Auto are the only options now via Mode... Mode displayed Analog ONLY yesterday...

Why the sudden change... ? who knows, except I have been through setup about 20 times, checking settings.. I don't think I changed anything substantial, but must have. I compared default settings to my original settings before changing anything - pretty much the same, for example surround mode was set to ON, left it as ON.

Mode is now set to Auto. Sound quality is better and louder via all the dsp channels.. Stadium, Stereo, etc. Some of those settings sound like they used to from last week, but......

Wide Screen is still not working correctly.

I really appreciate the help - thanks for being patient, it has been a while since I set the AVR up. There has been minimal changes in the past 10 + years.
