Hello guys, I am looking to pick up the emotiva Basx A3 for the whole front stage or the A2 for just my fronts. I'm not sure which one to get because I saw that the preamp doesn't completely disconnect in the 3600h. I'm currently running a 5 channel setup with 2 subs. Would the basx A3 be an issue?

Why get a power amp that's little different power-wise from what your avr already has? The A3 has less than a 1dB advantage. What speakers do you have? The pre-outs are live so adding an external power amp is easy enough in any case, and not being able to turn off some of the avr amp circuitry isn't all that important.

I am running Polk signature s30, four s15 with 2 svs PB 1000pro. I have a pair of s55 floor standing speakers but haven't used them yet.

So why the external amp? Why not invest in better speakers? Some room details and spl goals might help....

Mainly to get more power out of the s55 when I decide to hook them up in the future. Room size is the issue. I thought it would have been better to get an amp to power the whole front stage but I saw you can only turn off the Amps in the fronts on the 3600h.

The external amp you're choosing is little different from what the avr already has. You don't need to "turn off" the amps in the 3600 when using the pre-amp outputs. A more powerful external amp might make more of a difference, tho. External amps aren't going to make much difference in your proposed use. Generally I'd not spend more on the electronics until you spend more on better speakers/subs....

You can try this tool to help out with your determining variables http://www.hometheaterengineering.com/splcalculator.html

S55 spec:

  • Total Frequency Response32 Hz → 40000 Hz
  • Nominal Impedance8 ohms
  • Sensitivity (1 watt @ 1 meter)90 dB
  • Type2-way
  • Tweeter/Midrange Crossover Frequency2500 Hz
  • Power Handling (per channel)20 watts → 200 watts
They are not hard to drive, but if you want to pair them with a 200 WPC power amp, then as HD mentioned, there would no point to go with those Emotiva amps. Get something that can actually output 200 W 8 ohms, 300 W 4 ohms at low distortions.

Also as HD mentioned, you don't need to disconnect all, or any of the 3600's internal amps. Yes you will get low distortions if you do, so go ahead and disconnect the front left and right internal amps, but don't expect any audible difference either.

Hi OP,

Just my 2 cents here. I would steer clear of buying an amp until most everything else in your system is upgraded. I was in a similar situation as your self and really wanted an amp. The great folks on this forum told me it wouldn’t make a big difference (really any difference). However, I really wanted an AMP:p. So I added a Monolith 5X (200w/ch) to my AVR. My AVR is very similar to yours (X4300H).

Do i hear a slight difference at very high volumes? I think so, however Im also the person who shelled out the cash. So i have a reason to want to hear a difference.

I truly believe in a Blind A/B test I would have trouble picking when my amp was on.

Save your money and or get something else.

BTW how big is the Room? How far away from the speakers is the listening position?

IThanks for you guys input. I sit around 5.5 feet away from my center and have a medium size living room, have to get back to you on exact size.

Try THIS, you will be surprised.

As mx416 said..., and I agreed with him.

If you still go ahead and get a beast amp, you will most likely "hear" better sound stage, details that you never heard before as many forum members have reported, for the obvious reasons, i.e., the human mind can do/help hear/see amazing things...;) So, it may be worth it regardless.

Ok so my living room is around 13.5 x 12 and 8ft high ceiling. So around 162sq ft. So I think maybe the S55 towers may be ok for this space? This is considered a mid size room. Am I correct? There is another 3.5 ft behind me but that is the stairs that go up the my bedrooms.

See pg 62 of the pdf manual https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX3600H/NA/EN/index.php

FWIW I don't see in the 3600's manual that it has a specific pre-out mode (to turn off some amp circuitry) like some other Denon models offer. You realize larger speakers often are more sensitive and need less amp?

Those speakers generally would be fine in that size room, but it's more about how far you sit from the speakers as to amp power needed rather than room dimensions as a whole (altho the room volume can have more to do with subs' performance) . Try that spl calculator I linked for the speakers.

No, the inboard power amps on the X3600H remain powered when you use the pre-outs. Even the more recent X3700H which I have features a preamp mode, and the power amps remain powered in that setting while their inputs are disconnected from the preamp.

Depends....how loud do you listen? How far away from them are you? You'd get maybe a 3dB advantage....
