Denon AVR-2807 & Upconverting

Hi,

I recently updated most of my home theater with the following items:

Panasonic TH-37PX60U 37" plasma display (new) - wall mounted (tilt)
Denon AVR-2807 receiver (new)
DirecTV HR20-700 HD receiver with DVR (coming in Feb.)
DirecTV Series 2 receiver with TiVo (existing)
Oppo DV-981HD (coming soon)
Toshiba RD-XS35 DVD recorder (new, still in box - I may return it - ?)
Sony SL-VR1000 S-VHS VCR (existing)
Polk Audio RTi4 front speakers (existing, will maybe add M&K tripole rears)

My goal is to have all of the above going to the Denon 2807 and then use a single HDMI cable to go to the Panny, which is where upconverting/scaling comes in. I am painfully new to the topic of upconverting and am trying to learn as much as possible. To this end, a kind salesman at my local Magnolia Audio & Video has arranged a demonstration for me to see how the 2807 handles the upconversion process (I have read that, in general, receivers do not handle this very well).

What I am looking for are user's opinions & experiences with the issue of upconverting via a receiver. If someone has done this with the Denon 2807, all the better. If a "higher end" model Denon (or other brand) handles this better than the 2807 then please note the make & model. My price ceiling is $2K, preferably under $1500. Also, all of the above equipment is located in the same very small room. I am only using a pair of front speakers but will add tripole (possibly M&K) rears in the near future. My primary goal is to get the best picture possible while utilising the upconverting process thru a receiver.

Thanks so much for looking. I am eager to read the replies!:D

Upconvert to 480 or 1080?

I am interested in this question as well. More importantly to me, does the 2807 upconvert 480i or to 1080i? Thanks.
